Mark A. Chaney

Graveside services for Mark A. Chaney, 53, Lawrence, will be 3 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Underwood Cemetery. A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held Friday at The Castle Tea Room from 7 pm to 10 pm. Mr. Chaney died Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at his home.

He was born November 23, 1962, in Lawrence, the son of Donald Lee Chaney and Sharon Lynn Rogers Chaney.  He was a graduate of Lawrence High School in 1981, where he was active in the vocal music program and played football.  Mark was a pitcher and first baseman on the Lawrence American Legion Baseball team. He went on to attend The University of Kansas studying business and vocal music.
 
Mr. Chaney became a Circulation Manager for several newspapers in the Midwest including the Lawrence Journal World. Later he became successful in insurance sales and a mortgage broker for several years.  His career expanded into radio as an advertising representative for 1320 KLWN, where he also covered Lawrence High Football on KLWN with Hank Booth. He continued his career in radio as an account manager for Sports Talk 810 WHB Radio Kansas City.  Mr. Chaney continued his love of baseball over the years as a coach and an umpire. He was a talented and active vocalist, singing the national anthem for Kansas University Athletics and the Kansas City Royals. He was active in the Baker University Community Choir.

Survivors include daughters, Emily Elliott of Lawrence and Sarah Chaney-Lundquist (Molly Lundquist-Chaney) of Iowa; brothers, Michael D. Chaney (Tonya) and Rodney J. Chaney, both of Lawrence; grandchildren, Madeline, Oliver, and Rory. He was preceded in death by his parents.
