Services for Alfred J. Yost, 75, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Yost died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 6, 1930, in Alexander, the son of Adam John and Lydia Georg Yost. He graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1948 and the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science in 1951.He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from January 1953 until January 1955.He worked for the Lamb Funeral Home in Ottawa and Culbertson Funeral Home in Wichita. In 1964 he purchased the Fisher Funeral Home in Wellington, which became Yost Funeral Home; he owned it for 13 years. He purchased the Rumsey Funeral Home in Lawrence in 1978, which later became Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, where he worked until his death.He received a 50 Years of Service award in the funeral industry in 2001.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lawrence, the Sertoma Club of Lawrence, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, Ottawa Lodge No. 18 A.F. & A.M., Kansas Funeral Directors Assn., National Funeral Directors Assn. and the Lawrence Country Club.
He married Fleda Ann “Shorty” Drake on June 5, 1955, in Ottawa. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Brad, Fairway, and Bart, Lawrence; a sister, Martha Nemeth, Topeka; and two grandchildren Drake Yost of Fairway and Taylor Yost of Lawrence.
