Funeral services for David Eugene Cox, 54, Linwood, were held at 2 p.m. Friday August 13th at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Cox died Monday, Aug. 9, 2010, on the family farm, from injuries sustained in a farming accident.

He was born Aug. 9, 1956, in Lawrence, the son of Howard E. and Lorene Reetz Cox. He graduated from Linwood High School in 1974, and later served in the United States Marine Corps.  He then graduated in 1994 with a Civil Engineering Degree from Kansas University. He earned his CE master’s degree from Kansas University in 2000 while working full time.

Mr. Cox was employed by the City of Olathe as a utilities engineering manager for the past 10 years. He had previously worked for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and also at a private consulting firm in Kansas City, Kan. He also farmed his family’s farm. He spent many years as a Douglas County 4-H project leader of forestry, geology, and horticulture.

He married Jodi Creque on Nov. 3, 1984, at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Eudora and remained there as a member. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Jessica L. Reding and husband Gabriel, Linwood, and Mary Ellen, of the home; two sons, Jacob David and Alexander Eugene, both of the home; his parents, Linwood; two sisters, Marilyn Cox Whitenton and husband Philip, Yuma, Ariz., and Sheri Flory and husband Paul, Baldwin City; two grandsons, Matthew and Nicholas; and his mother-in-law,  La Jeanne Creque.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  The casket will remain closed.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Douglas County 4-H, or to the David E. Cox Memorial Scholarship at Eudora High School for post-secondary engineering students, in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS., 66044.

How hard it is to lose someone so young, someone who has touched so many lives in positive ways. Someone wrote, “Life is like a poem. Some are short, some are long, but all are complete when the Author lays down his pen.” May your faith in our heavenly Father give you comfort and peace that passes understanding. – Pastor Mary Lou

From Scott Keltner...

David was one of the few parents I ever met who could talk about the math I was teaching his kids and give the impression that he wanted to be in my class more than they did (which says a lot since he raised such good kids). Through having Mary, Jacob, and Alex in class, I’ve collected a lot of fond memories of David’s kindness, intelligence, compassion, and zest for life. He will be dearly missed, but his wife and kids leave a great legacy of how he lived and will live on. God bless you all.
