He was born Aug. 9, 1956, in Lawrence, the son of Howard E. and Lorene Reetz Cox. He graduated from Linwood High School in 1974, and later served in the United States Marine Corps. He spent many years as a Douglas County 4-H project leader of forestry, geology, and horticulture.
He married Jodi Creque on Nov. 3, 1984, at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Eudora and remained there as a member. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Jessica L. Reding and husband Gabriel, Linwood, and Mary Ellen, of the home; two sons, Jacob David and Alexander Eugene, both of the home; his parents, Linwood; two sisters, Marilyn Cox Whitenton and husband Philip, Yuma, Ariz., and Sheri Flory and husband Paul, Baldwin City; two grandsons, Matthew and Nicholas; and his mother-in-law, La Jeanne Creque.
Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The casket will remain closed.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Douglas County 4-H, or to the David E. Cox Memorial Scholarship at Eudora High School for post-secondary engineering students, in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS., 66044.

How hard it is to lose someone so young, someone who has touched so many lives in positive ways. Someone wrote, “Life is like a poem. Some are short, some are long, but all are complete when the Author lays down his pen.” May your faith in our heavenly Father give you comfort and peace that passes understanding. – Pastor Mary Lou

Dear Jodi and family,
I remember being a part of the celebration when your children were born–and working with you for so many years in L & D, then as you went to to become an FNP. I am so very sorry for your loss, there are just no appropriate words…
Just know you are in the thoughts and prayers of so many people right now.

David was one of the few parents I ever met who could talk about the math I was teaching his kids and give the impression that he wanted to be in my class more than they did (which says a lot since he raised such good kids). Through having Mary, Jacob, and Alex in class, I’ve collected a lot of fond memories of David’s kindness, intelligence, compassion, and zest for life. He will be dearly missed, but his wife and kids leave a great legacy of how he lived and will live on. God bless you all.
