Joseph R. McLaughlin

Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph R. McLaughlin, 88, Lawrence will be at 10am. Thursday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will be held on Friday at the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, KS.

Mr. McLaughlin died Saturday at Brandon Woods at Alvamar. He was born March 5, 1923 in Cambridge, Mass. the son of Cornelius R. and Louise D. Gerry McLaughlin.

He worked for the US Postal Service for many years and retired as Post Master at Stafford, Kan.

Mr. McLaughlin served in the Army Air Corp serving during WWII. He subsequently served in the Kansas National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Lawrence, and a life member of the American Legion and the V.F.W.

He married Grace McCarthy on Feb. 2, 1946 in Hays, KS. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1999. He married Bernice Alexander on Sept. 30, 2006, in Lawrence and she survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his wife Grace, 5 brothers Charles, John, Francis, Paul, and Edward McLaughlin, and a sister Margaret Moeder.

Survivors include sons Kenneth M. McLaughlin and wife Arlinda of Pinedale, WY, Donald R. McLaughlin of Great Bend, KS, Lawrence E. McLaughlin and wife Sharon of Phoenix, AZ, Daniel J. McLaughlin and wife Julie of Olathe, KS, and Patrick C. McLaughlin of Overland Park, KS, a daughter Kathleen A. McLaughlin Rathbun and husband John of Lawrence, sisters Mary Skipton of Rockville, MD, and Regina Quinn of Danville, OH, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Wednesday noon to 8pm. at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at Corpus Christi Catholic Church Thursday from 9am to service time. A rosary will be said prior to the mass.

In Great Bend, the family will receive friends on Friday May 6, from 1pm. to 3pm. at the Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, Kansas

Graveside service will be at 3:30pm. Friday at the Great Bend Cemetery.

We met Joe shortly before me married Diane’s mother, Betti. It was quickly obvious that Joe was a wonderful man. He was full of life, easy to visit with and absolutely dedicated to Betti. We always looked forward to our trips back to Lawrence and the opportunity to spend time with Joe & Momma. Joe, you will be missed and we are garateful for the short time we had with you.
