Ann Kirkpatrick Mackie

Memorial services for Ann Kirkpatrick “Onna” Mackie, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Ave., Mission, Kan.

Mrs. Mackie died Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Bridge Haven Care Cottage, Lawrence.

She was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Neosho, Mo., the daughter of Voyle Vernell and Mariana Wills Kirkpatrick. She was raised in Kansas City, Mo., attended Border Star Elementary School, and graduated from Southwest High School. She later attended the University of Missouri, but returned to Kansas City before graduating and went to work for Woolf Brothers. It was then that her mother decided to fix her up with William R. “Bill” Mackie, whom she married on Aug. 5, 1949.

Mrs. Mackie went back to college, and in 1987 at the age of 63, she graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Art History, on the exact date of the 50th anniversary of Bill’s graduation from KU. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include four children, Elizabeth Orrick, Omaha, George Mackie and wife Pennylea, Boise, Mary Ann Mackie, Seattle, and Willie Mackie, Baldwin City; eight grandchildren, Jenna Mackie, Lindsay Wall, Scott Orrick, Timothy Mackie, David Orrick, Gaelan Mackie, Halley Mackie, and Hannah Mackie; seven great grandchildren, Lola Wall, Lena Mackie, Annabelle Wall, Simona Mackie, Carina McCall, Meira McCall, and Emmaline Wall; a sister, Jane LaPlante; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Care Alternatives Hospice, 1420 NW Vivion Rd., Suite 105, Kansas City, Mo., 64118, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Ann brought special joy to my life in the short time I spent with her. Her sweet smile is ever present in my awareness.
