Elgar ‘J.R.’ Smith

Graveside services for Elgar ‘J.R.’ Smith, 90, Lawrence, will be at 10 am Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at his home.

He was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Jefferson County, Kan., the son of Claude Elgar and Harriet Ellen Wood Smith. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, and later served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an electrician in North Africa and Italy during World War II.

Mr. Smith was a pressman at Allen Press, and retired after 37 years of service.

He married Marjorie L. Vogler, and together they shared over 50 years of marriage. She preceded him in death, as did his brother, Glenn M. Smith, and sister, Lois E. Smith Duver.

Survivors include a daughter, Marsha K. Smith, Lawrence; a son, Scott Smith and wife Jana, Lawrence; and a granddaughter, Tracy M. Kennedy John and husband Larry.

Friends may call from noon – 8 pm Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6:30 – 8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lawrence Senior Center, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044

I was so shocked and sad to hear that Elgar had died. I was filling his insulin syringes and taking them to him every 9-10 days. I enjoyed visiting with him each time, and I will miss him so much.
