Memorial services for Torben Klarlund, 71, Lawrence, will be 3 pm, Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.
Mr. Klarlund died Monday, September 30, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City.
He was born December 12, 1941, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Knud Borge and Ebba Petersen Klarlund. He received schooling in Denmark and earned a degree in civil engineering. He moved from Denmark to Nova Scotia, Canada and then immigrated to the United States in 1970.
Mr. Klarlund worked as a civil engineer, volunteer fireman, and most recently as a supervisor for Reynolds Metal in Kansas City, MO. He enjoyed building things, working on old cars, and visiting Denmark whenever he could. He was a people person, patient, and could fix anything.
He married Jytte Irene Grumlose, July 11, 1964 in Nova Scotia, Canada. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Susan Theroff and husband David, of Berryton, KS; a son, Peter Klarlund and wife Desseray, of Liberty, MO; and grandchildren, Torben, Taylor, and Birgitte.
Torben was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Erik Klarlund; and sister, Eva Albeck.
Torben had a larger than life personality. He believed everyone deserved a second chance and helping hand. A living example of do unto others as you would have done unto you. Torben treated everyone he met as his friend.
The family suggests memorials to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, sent in care of the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, PO Box 1260, Lawrence, KS 66044.

We are saddened to learn of Torben’s passing. We cherish the connections we had with all the Klarlund family–Torben, Jytte, Susan, Peter, and Eric. You all were a great addition to the Lawson, MO community. We remember fondly his infectious smile and laughter. We pray the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ will comfort you during this time of loss.

Torbin Jytte,Susan and Andy: You were all so much of the community. After our first meeting at the city council where my first impression was dead wrong. We became good friends.
I do and will deeply miss Torben. I am honored to have been his friend. He was a true craftsman in every sense of the word. A man with a truly generous heart and an incredible sense of humor….and so much more.
I raise a bottle of Aqua Vite to you. I miss you!
We have all been so lucky to have Torben in our lives. Always smiling, always upbeat & positive, always a welcome with open arms & heart. A man with only friends; there wasn’t anyone who did not love this warm & caring big Teddy bear. Every word he spoke was with a smile. And every day of his life was another opportunity to spread joy to others. Jytte, Susan, Peter, Eric, & their families were blessed to call him theirs. And we were truly blessed to have shared his friendship. Sincerest sympathies. So sad. God bless.
Dear Jytte, Susan and families,
We are so sorry to hear about Torben. He truly was such a warm, kind and endearing man. There isn’t a Christmas that goes by that we don’t think about all of you.
You and your families will be in our thoughts and prayers. I know that Torben is in God’s arms now but the world is a sadder place without him.
With deep sympathy,
Ed and Irene Heege
