Roma L. Kennedy

A Celebration of Life for Roma L. Kennedy, 90, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Friday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Dennis Chadwick officiating. A private family burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab in Baldwin City.

She was born May 15. 1923, in Lawrence, the daughter of Rollie and Alice Whitaker Laster. She attended Lawrence schools, and worked as a bookkeeper at Lawrence Sanitary, Weaver’s, and Lawrence Freight Line.  Roma and her husband John owned and operated the Chief Lunch. Roma was a member of the First Christian Church. She was also a member of various Masonic organizations, including Order of the Eastern Star, Beauceant, and Worthy Past High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem  She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, cooking, leading various organizations, and spending time with her family.

She married John Leslie Kennedy on Nov. 29, 1939, in Lawrence.  He preceded her in death in 1995.  Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Moore and husband Don, Canton, Ga., and Shirley Goff and husband Gary, Gold Canyon, Ariz.; a sister, Beverly O’Mohundro, Denver, Colo; three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 8 pm Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6-7 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Grace Hospice or First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Shirley and Sharon am so sorry for the loss of your mother. she will be greatly missed. i will never forget Roma at all…her laugh and card playing. She was a wonderful gal. But she is a special Angel now and will watch over us as she would any other time. but now between Phyllis, Phil, Johnnie, they can all play cards again. miss you all
