Elizabeth (Bette) M. Lukens

Elizabeth (Bette) Lukens was born Jan. 19, 1922, in Valley Falls, KS. Her parents were Bess Edmonds McLeod and Fred McLeod. She had two sisters, Martha Shultz and Mary Poole. She met the love of her life, Bud Lukens, in high school. After attending KU, Bette joined Bud in CA and they were married in 1942. Bud was drafted and sent to Manila, but luckily he returned unharmed and their marriage lasted 67 years before he died six years ago. They had two daughters, Kathleen Mellor and Cindi Miller; 4 grandchildren Molly Nespor, Betsy Mellor, Brandon Hopkins and Holly Renbarger; eight great-grandchildren; and many close nieces and nephews. Besides family, Bette loved Lawrence, bridge, KU basketball, philosophical discussions and Democrats. We will miss her.

No public services are planned.

Messages & Condolences

From Nancy (Mitchell) Moore...

Dear Cindi and Kathy, my thoughts and prayers are with the both and your entire families. I so enjoyed the times I would see and visit with her at both Meadowlark and BrandonWoods after so many years. She and my mom always so enjoyed their bridge and played together so many times through these many years. May she now Rest In Peace, and am sure they already have a bridge game marathon going on. My love to all.

From Andy Tuttle...

So sorry to hear this. Bud and Betty were wonderful neighbors. I remember the time the power was out to our house but not theirs. They let us run an extension cord from their garage so we could watch the Big 12 Basketball Championship game when KU beat Texas.

From Kenny and Ann...

Cindi, so sorry for your loss
