Rev. Ernest L. ‘Ernie’ Scott

A memorial visitation for Ernie Scott, 80, Ozawkie, will be held Saturday, January 19, 2019, from 3:00 to 4:30 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

His Heavenly Father ended the suffering from Parkinson’s Disease so that Ernie would be in the presence of the Lord beginning on Saturday, January 12, 2019.

Ernie was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 7, 1938, to Leroy Austin Scott and Mary Ann Scott (nee Goforth).  In school, he was in singing competitions, receiving 1’s in every performance.  His rich, bass voice was in high demand, and he performed at concerts, weddings, and other special occasions.  He was also an Eagle Scout as the Assistant Troop Master.  As a junior in high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve.  Upon graduating from Spring Hill High School with honors and numerous awards, he was offered a 4-year full scholarship to The Julliard School of Performing Arts in New York.  Choosing a different path, he started working for Walt Boyle Toys and Games in an executive position.  Ultimately, he was transferred to Chicago, where he earned his accounting degree from LaSalle University.  There, he started praying “for the right girl” to marry when God “hit him hard right between the eyes” as Barbara Gylund walked in front of him.  After agreeing to marry within 2 days of meeting, marrying four months later, raising five children, they remained together for more than 60 years.

Receiving the call to the ministry at an early age, Ernie willingly accepted the duty of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

During their marriage, God directed their footsteps nationwide and to Canada, South Africa, Mexico, and Europe, where they preached and witnessed many healings, miracles, and salvation. While singing his favorite songs, including “How Great Thou Art,” “I Am Not Ashamed Of The Gospel,” “The Love of God,” and “My Tribute,” the anointing ministered to the hurting, and people wept.  As shepherd he mentored many young couples.  As a prophet, he obeyed the Holy Spirit.  He also served several churches in a presbytery capacity.  His popular radio program “Word of Life” was broadcast in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and Marquette, Michigan,

Ernie was a craftsman, and his beautiful work is spread all over the world, including Africa, where he helped build a Christian school.  In Mexico, he labored physically as well as spiritually after earning his Master’s Certificate in Spanish at Kingsway in Mission, TX.  As a father, he was attentive and the star of the neighborhood as activities were always going on at the Scott house.

To describe Ernie, it could be summed up in saying he was not ashamed of the gospel.  He constantly prayed for people to know Jesus, to gain a rich relationship with Him, and to witness to others.  He never boasted of his natural gifts and talents, but he always boasted of the goodness of the Lord.  He spent his life as a servant in the highest calling.

Ernie is survived by his brother, Frank J. Scott (Paola, KS), his beautiful bride, Barbara, five children: Steven Scott (Mary) of Gardner, KS, Leslie Anderson of Columbia, MO, Robert Scott (Suzanne) of Franklin, TN, Matthew Scott of Galveston, TX, and Denise (Mike) Valkar of Lawrence, KS; 7 grandchildren: Mitchell, Nicholas, Jennifer, Taylor, Maddison, Trinity, Veronica, Bennett, and Garrett; and 2 great-granddaughters: Jenna and Teghan.  Ernie joins both his parents, other family, and friends in the Kingdom of God.

Memorials may be made to Midland Care in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, PO Box 1260, Lawrence KS 66044.

Ernie’s legacy to share is “Don’t give up.”

The family will host a Celebration of Life and Ministry on his birthday, April 7, 2019, in Ozawkie, Kansas, where he and Barbara resided.  We ask you to join us in giving God the glory.
