Carl Edward Flory

Carl Edward Flory (77) passed away on March 28, 2024 after sustaining injuries from a farm accident on the family farm.

Carl lived his entire life on the family farm in rural Baldwin City, and was born on January 20, 1947 to Alva Jacob Flory and Ethel “Goldie“ (Carpenter) Flory.

Carl graduated from Lawrence High School in 1965. He met his wife, Velma, at Allen’s Drive-In in 1969.

Carl married the love of his life, Velma Darlene (Holladay) Flory, on June 13, 1971 and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage together. They raised their children, Donna (Flory) Hughes and Dale Flory on their farm and ran a dairy for many years. Carl was still farming wheat and soybeans up until his death. He also enjoyed collecting Allis-Chalmers tractors and working on them. When people came over, he enjoyed showing them off.

He is survived by his wife, Velma, of the home, his daughter Donna (Todd) Hughes, Baldwin City, his son, Dale (Kirsten), Baldwin City, his brother A. Allen (Mickele) Flory, Eudora, and grandchildren Jacob Hughes, Taylor Flory and Carter Flory all of Baldwin City plus a large extended family.

Carl was a lifelong farmer, and worked alongside his Dad and brother and eventually took over the family farm. His love of God and his family, friends and community was evident in his handwritten notes, his drop by visits and storytelling. He always ended a phone call or a visit with the words “Be Careful.”

Visitation will be held at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 3 from 6-8pm.

The funeral service will be held at Worden Cornerstone Church on Thursday, April 4 at 10am with burial following at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A luncheon reception will follow at Worden Cornerstone Church. The family requests “farmer casual” dress attire for the services.

Memorial Contributions may be made to BHS FFA, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1260 Lawrence, Kansas 66044.

From Aaron Houseman...

Only met Carl a few times but that’s all it took to understand that we shared a common interest in tractors. Couple years back I was visiting a nearby friend and noticed Carl was stuck in a field close to the house. Stopped by to help out and in the process of trying to help get the stuck tractor out ,the John Deere tractor Carl was on suddenly flipped over with Carl on board. I was scared for Carl beyond belief. Me my friend and Todd all worked tirelessly to get Carl out from under that ol John Deere and eventually after much digging with a claw hammer and using and old wrench found laying on the ground spilled from the tractors tool box ,we were able to remove the tractor seat and free Carl. I was never so relieved when I saw him demanding to stand up afterwards. I think about that day often and am glad he made it through that. Carl was very thankful that day he was just the kind of good ol fellow you felt you knew your whole life even if it was for only five minutes. I will miss his pleasant nature and kind ways and his shared interest in tractors and such. I hope family and friends find some peace in knowing he was doing what he enjoyed…..and Carl I know your riding your favorite bright orange Allis through the pearly gates with that big smile.

Carl and his family were an important part of my life since high school, .. we always had too much fun! I so enjoyed the many times and many hours spent with Carl, Allen and their wonderful parents Goldie & Alva.

From Jennifer (Owen) Bravo...

Carl was a one of those rare people who you could always count on. The kind of person you want as a friend and neighbor. My parents were the “weekend farmers” across the field and he and his family were (and are) always so kind to us, especially through the time when my Dad was dying and my Mom was left alone. I live in another state and being far away was hard, but I always found comfort in knowing that Carl and his whole family were keeping an eye out for my Mom. I know he helped more times than I knew about. I am eternally grateful. My sincere condolences for your immense loss.

From Janet Grant...

Velma, Donna, Dale and families,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time of sorrow.
I have so many wonderful memories of Carl. Not only was he my cousin, he was also my schoolmate at Willow Springs for 7 years. Our families worked together putting up hay. Carl was a good worker, good hearted, good natured and kind, except when we played Red Rover at school. At those times he was a true competitor!
I cherish those memories. I haven’t seen Carl in several years.
How I wish I had reconnected with him!
I will continue to pray for you as you go forward in your earthly journey. Just remember that we are left here in sorrow, but Carl was received with love, joy and celebration as he passed through the veil and was reunited with many loved ones including my parents and many of our fellow cousins❣️
