L. Alberta Smith passed peacefully on April 21, 2026. She was born and raised on the family Century Farm in Richland, Kansas August 11, 1930, the daughter of Albert and Linna Houk.
She graduated from University High School, located on the campus of Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. She married Hayden Smith on December 15, 1951 in Topeka, Kansas, who preceded her in death in December 2020. She worked several years at Postal Savings & Loan, Capital City Bank, and Overbrook Livestock Commission, but spent most of her years helping Hayden on the family farm in Richland.
She was preceded in death by her parents as well as sister Lotta Keefover-Bevitt.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Marsha) Smith, a son Randy (Debbie) Smith, a daughter Jill (Greg) Brungardt, all of Berryton, 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, sister Ethel May Wulfkuhle, Tecumseh, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held for both Alberta and Hayden at the Overbrook Public Library, 317 Maple Street, Overbrook, Kansas on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 2:00-4:00 pm.
The family requests donations to Midland Hospice or Busy Bees Club in Alberta’s name sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS 66044.

Bertie was my very best friend–beginning as rural high school students attending University High School during World War II—-we were cheer leaders together–etc etc until graduation in 1947–then we continued through our marriages–children–and many OTS/UHS school runions—-for years–She and Loretta receive all the credit for keeping our high school buddies together for years—Alita York Coooper
