Funeral services for Barbara Jean Sufian, 67, Lawrence, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Lawrence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Sufian died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Barb was born in Springfield, Mo. on Sept. 27, 1949, to Melburn N. and Eleanor Carnegie Washburn. As part of a military family, she traveled frequently and graduated from Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany in 1967. She earned a degree in education from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Mo.
As a young girl, she enjoyed helping with her father’s military parties and spent her life entertaining family and friends. People were her hobby. She loved to travel, to learn about other cultures and make friends across the globe.
She settled in Lawrence and helped raise many children – including her four grandchildren — in a home-based daycare. She helped abused children as a longtime social worker. Most recently she helped students with special needs as an attendant on First Student buses in Lawrence.
Her passions were cooking and celebrating life with family and friends in her home.
Survivors include husband, Abdella (Ochaala) Sufian Amin, they were married Feb. 17, 2005, in Lahor, Punjab, Pakistan; daughter, Pat (Webster) Ozaki; brothers, Lloyd Washburn and wife Nancy (Davis), of Kansas, City, Mo., and Robert Washburn; brother in law, Stan Feldman; step sister, Chong Yoon; grandchildren, Steven, Caitlyn, Daniel and Megan Ozaki; nephews, Eric, Robert, Yamin and Yaujan; nieces, Valerie and Vicky (husband Martin)
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sharon Ann Washburn Feldman; and son-in-law, David Ozaki.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Pinckney Neighborhood Association, sent in care of the funeral home.
