Funeral services with honors for Dallas K. Murphy, 82, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church, with Rev. Dr. Peter Luckey and Chaplain Paul Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Vinland Cemetery. Dallas died Tuesday, Apr. 5, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 19, 1933, in Cortez, Colo., the son of Eloise Beck. He was raised in Ellsworth, Kan., and graduated from high school there in 1951. He served for many years in the Army National Guard and the Reserves, 35th Infantry Division, and later graduated from several law enforcement training academies. Dallas served with the Kansas Highway Patrol for 14 years (1956-70) and served with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years (1970-91) where he served in the capacities of deputy, supervisor, Undersheriff, and Jail Administrator, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Upon retirement, he served with the United States Marshal’s Service for eight years (1993-2001). He was a member of several professional organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, Kansas Sheriff’s Association, Kansas Trooper’s Association, Kansas Peace Officers Association, and the Capitol Area Major Case Squad. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Abdallah Shriners, Rotary, Sertoma Club, and NRA. He enjoyed horses, boating, and pistol shooting.
Dallas married Barbara J. Wrench on July 5, 1958, in Lawrence. They later divorced. Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Bohmann, Lawrence, and Lisa Showalter and husband Jeff, also of Lawrence; and three grandchildren, Blake Bohmann and wife Katie, Brett Bohmann, and Sarah Showalter.
Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Saturday and Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them Sunday from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.
