Marie “Joyce” Hobson

Graveside services for Marie “Joyce” Hobson, 83, Baldwin City, will be 1 pm, Friday, December 13, 2019, at Oakwood Cemetery, Baldwin City, KS. Dessert with family and friends will follow from 2-4 pm, at Worden United Methodist Church.

Marie “Joyce” Longstreth Hobson was born on July 8, 1936 in Nevada, Missouri, the daughter of Winfred Graves Longstreth and Anna Mary Chrisenberry Longstreth.

Joy (her childhood name) attended schools in Nevada, Missouri until the family moved to Baldwin City, Kansas in 1952. She graduated from Baldwin High School with the class of 1954. Following graduation, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska and attended Business College with three of her high school classmates, returning to Baldwin City after completion.

She was united in marriage to Tom Barkley Hobson on November 27, 1955 at Ives Chapel United Methodist church in Baldwin City, Kansas. They shared fifty-six years of marriage until his death on December 24, 2011.

She was employed at Hallmark Cards in Lawrence, Kansas and USD #348 in Baldwin City, KS but spent most of her years as a homemaker.

Joyce was a member of the Worden United Methodist church and enjoyed helping with VBS. She served as a Girl Scout leader with her daughters and remained active for many more years, with girls in the community that she loved dearly. After Tom’s retirement in September of 1991, they enjoyed many years of travel on bus tours to various places within the US & Canada. Joyce enjoyed reading, working in her flower gardens, sewing and many types of crafts including woodworking & painting.

Joyce is survived by two daughters, Kim Heckathorne (John) and Kelly Schwartz (Greg) all of Baldwin City; five grandchildren, Kelsey Heckathorne Franck (Jerod) Papillion, NE, Charley Jo Schwartz Pittenger (Brett) Baldwin City, Colby Heckathorne Scanlon (Matt) Lawrence KS, Camdon Schwartz, Baldwin City and Hayley Schwartz Nye (Jonathan) Olathe; and three great-granddaughters, Keeley & Landree Pittenger and Ella Franck.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Winfred & Anna Mary Longstreth; husband, Tom & brother, J.W. Longstreth.

Most important to Joyce was her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She treasured her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It was her joy to be called “GRAM”. She will be deeply missed.
