Dallas K. Murphy

Funeral services with honors for Dallas K. Murphy, 82, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church, with Rev. Dr. Peter Luckey and Chaplain Paul Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Vinland Cemetery. Dallas died Tuesday, Apr. 5, 2016, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Sept. 19, 1933, in Cortez, Colo., the son of Eloise Beck. He was raised in Ellsworth, Kan., and graduated from high school there in 1951. He served for many years in the Army National Guard and the Reserves, 35th Infantry Division, and later graduated from several law enforcement training academies. Dallas served with the Kansas Highway Patrol for 14 years (1956-70) and served with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years (1970-91) where he served in the capacities of deputy, supervisor, Undersheriff, and Jail Administrator, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Upon retirement, he served with the United States Marshal’s Service for eight years (1993-2001). He was a member of several professional organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, Kansas Sheriff’s Association, Kansas Trooper’s Association, Kansas Peace Officers Association, and the Capitol Area Major Case Squad. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Abdallah Shriners, Rotary, Sertoma Club, and NRA. He enjoyed horses, boating, and pistol shooting.

Dallas married Barbara J. Wrench on July 5, 1958, in Lawrence. They later divorced. Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Bohmann, Lawrence, and Lisa Showalter and husband Jeff, also of Lawrence; and three grandchildren, Blake Bohmann and wife Katie, Brett Bohmann, and Sarah Showalter.

Friends may call from 9 am to 8 pm Saturday and Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them Sunday from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Mr. Richard J. Murphy Jr passed over last night at approx 5:30 pm, Sept 12th, 2015. Richard was born in Wichita, Ks, Nov 10, 1937, the only child of Richard J. Murphy Sr. and Maxine J Schoen Murphy. After leaving his General M.D. practice in Tipton, KS, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where Richard Sr. resumed his practice. Father was from Erie, PA, and mother from Cawker City, KS. The family resided in Royal Oak, Michigan, for the better part of three decades, while Richard Sr. pursued a successful medical practice in urban Detroit of his own. Richard Jr attended the University of Michigan where he received his BA and MA in Business Administration. Jr was attending U.M Law School in the 196O’s when he was injured by a speeding car while he was a pedestrian. Medical Assistance has followed the near-fatal accident. Assisted Living has been needed in Michigan and Kansas until his passing this year at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, KS. His first cousin, Douglas H. Dean, was his Guardian. A devout Catholic, Richard will be cremated at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence and sent to be with his parents in Boca Raton, Florida. He was a man of God. May he rest in Peace.
