Graveside services with military honors for Alonzo E. Howard, 87, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Howard died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.
He was born Mar. 29, 1923, in El Dorado, Kan., the son of Alonzo and Cordelia Dee Mitchell Howard. He served in the United States Army, where he received the Good Conduct Medal and two Bronze Service Stars.
Mr. Howard was a self-employed painting contractor. He was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church.
He married Marilyn Kay Wales on October 24, 1981, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Other surviviors include nine children, Earlene Pone, Colorado Springs, Alonda Martin, Aurora, Colo., Steven Howard and Renee Candies, Denver, Pierre Howard, and Patrick Roberts, Lona Roberts, Heidi Roberts, and Wayne Roberts, all of Lawrence; four sisters, Bessie White, Chicago, Christina Johnson, Lawrence, Dottie Coates, Kansas City, Kan., and Peggy Thompson, Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Daisy Smith, Mary Kathryn Sweeps, and Barbara Taylor.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alonzo Howard Memorial Fund, in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Uncle Lonzo, I will miss sharing our birthdays. The cards, the notes and most of all the laughs each year. My heart goes out to Marilyn.
My father, there was no one like you in the world. You took me,my brothers and sisters into your family and heart. you never treated us like we were step kids. Everything good in me is because of you. I hope you knew how very much you meant to me and everyone who got the blessing to have met you. love you so much.
Mom be strong, he will never leave our hearts.
Ill miss you grandpa i lived with you most of my life and i love you so much.
May the Lord give you strength during this time of loss.
You shall be greatly missed by all that met you. You were an extraordiary Father and Friend. Always a smile on your face and such love to share. I am greatful for the time I spent with you even though it was many years ago, still seems like yesterday. I love and miss you, you are where you belong in the arms of the angels, yet many hearts are in such pain, we will see you soon when the time comes.
I recall with fondness the numerous times Mr. Howard took us camping. God be with the Family during this time of mourning.
Alonzo you shall be missed. You leave behind you a leagacy of love, laughter and memories in all those that knew you. Your grandchildren will be sharing and passing on your stories for generations to come. God bless you and may you rest in peace.
