Charles D. ‘Doug’ Coffman Jr. passed away May 30, 2013, at his home following a long illness. Doug was born Jan. 11, 1943, on a farm just outside of Halfway, Mo., the eldest son of Charles D. Sr. and Georgia Guinn Ross Coffman. Most of his school years were in the Ruskin area of Kansas City.
In 1960, Doug was saved and baptized into Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo. Later that same year, God called him to preach the Gospel. At the time of his death, he was a member of Charity Missionary Baptist Church, Independence, Mo.
Doug married his high school sweetheart, Patricia I. DeShazo on June 2, 1962, and has one son, Mark Douglas Coffman. Doug and Patty moved to Lawrence in 1969 and lived in the same house where Patty was raised from 1970 until his death. Doug is survived by his wife, Patty, of the home; his son Mark (Kim) of Humansville, Mo; granddaughter Kira Coffman, Greeley, Colo., and Kim’s grandchildren; two brothers, Robert A. Coffman (Carol) and Johnnie Coffman and their children; father-in-law John Mark DeShazo, and brother-in-law Roy DeShazo. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister-in-law, Mary Coffman.
We will miss Doug, but we know by his own testimony that he’s gone to walk those streets of gold with his Savior.
Services for Doug will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in North Lawrence. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to VNA/Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044. Online condolences may be sent to rumsey-yost.com.
I am sorry to hear about Doug’s passing. He wss a pleasure to work with at Deli Express.
He is home now and celbrating with our King.
Doug, Mike Casady, Bill Eager and I were the closest of friends from the eighth grade on through high school graduation. We all spent some time with Doug and Patty right after they married and lived in the small apartments that used to be on the southwest corner of 115th and old 71 Highway (now Hickman Mills Road). Those meals together helped Patty to become known for her fried chicken – chuckle. They used to walk the block or so south and have donuts and pasties with my Dad. Not a day goes by that I do not think of those days with great fondness. Patty, I am sorry for your loss, but know that Doug is truly home.
I went to grade school and high school with Doug. He lived about five houses away from me. I always thought of Doug as a kind and gentle giant. He was a fine person and I was so sad to hear of his passing. I will always remember our summers together and how he would offer me breakfast.
His breakfast would consist of fried chicken and mash potatoes.
Patty, I never met you but my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sister Patty so sorry to hear of Bro Doug’s passing he was a gentle giant among the brotherhood respected by many including yours truly. May the Lord wrap his everlasting arms around you and the family at this time knowing memories are gifts from God that death cannot destroy as Brother Doug enjoys the glories of heaven. Patty: ‘Doug’ made many friends that will miss his good work and the example he gave of living a good life. He was a kind and generous man and memories of his smiles and good humor will remain with us, although he has gone to a better place. It was truly a pleasure to have known him. I know that now you must grieve, but pray that you will soon find solice in knowing that he rests in peace.
Patty, Doug always said he could not sing here, but he would sing up there. I have great confidence that he is singing the song of the redeemed. May God keep you in his love.
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the recent loss of your dear loved one. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. May the God of comfort be with you in this time of sorrow. May these words bring you hope, “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) This promise will be fulfilled one day, until then, may all your memories sustain you in the days to come.
Patty
