Marie J. Rutledge

Services for Marie Louise Jeanneret Rutledge, 88, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at a later date in McGehee, Arkansas.

Mrs. Rutledge died Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

She was born August 15, 1925, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Charles and Louise Elizabeth Holcomb Jeanneret. Marie attended McGehee High School in McGehee, Arkansas and graduated in 1943. She married her high school sweetheart, Walter Leon Rutledge, January 13th 1945 following Leon’s discharge from the Navy. The ceremony was held at McGehee United Methodist Church . Marie recalled that Leon’s proposal was a surprise. She answered “yes” on the spot, when he popped the question and they spent the next 52 years together. They had one daughter, Becky who lives in Lawrence.

After marriage, Marie worked for a local bank in McGehee as a teller. She enjoyed a 10 year career at banks in McGehee and Memphis Tennessee. Her husband was an Auditor for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company for 35 years, and his job took them around the United States. Leon and Marie decided to stay in Kansas City permanently after his final placement with Firestone. Marie moved to Lawrence in 2002 to be closer to her daughter.

Marie attended the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence and was an active volunteer in church activities from UMW, staffing the church stall at the Farmers Market. Marie loved the outdoors from the time she was a girl scout growing up, and as troop leader as an adult. She loved all of her pugs from “Meg” to “Snowball” and her 4 grandpugs as well.

What Marie loved most about life was, “life itself”.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church Committee on Relief (UMCOR), sent in care of the funeral home.
