From David Whillock...

Ed was a mentor of mine in Columbia. He was a true scholar and a wonderful person. Each time I teach I think of Ed and how he challenged us. I send my best wishes to his daughter, Jessica, and his son, Edward, and let them know that we all miss him and mourn his loss. Godspeed Ed.

From Carol Burns...

A note to the family of Professor Ed Small on the event of his passing: Take comfort in his memory and the love he left behind. He was a good man and an inspiration. Although we never did get around to that cup of coffee, he was never far from my thoughts. And I am so thankful that he was part of my life.
My heartfelt condolences,
Carol Burns

From Vickie Goetz...

I enjoyed Professor Small as a professor and person. He was always very young at heart . My condolences to his family.

From Joseph and Barbara Anderson...

We mourn the recent death of Edward S. Small. To those of us who were his colleagues, he set a standard of academic integrity that few met. In a system continually swept up in fad and fashion, he remained unmoved. In a time of increasingly compromised criteria, he held firm. Once dubbed a “rara avis” by his mentor Sam Becker, he was a man of insights and ideas. In a rookery of posers he stood apart. He was indeed rare; he was the genuine article. A lifelong friend, he will be sorely missed.

From Mike Boring...

I was at the front desk at Oldfather Studios for many years, and I remember both Ed and Ruth as wonderful “characters”! Often with a toothpick in his mouth, Ed would tell a great tale, or Ruth would come in, sighing that Ed had left some papers at home! A hug to the whole family.

From Michael Gunter...

Ed was a wonderful teacher. Since leaving Kansas our conversations, although infrequent, were filled with good humor and kindness. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

From Fernando Arenas...
