Richard H. ‘Dick’ Comer

Services for Richard H. ‘Dick’ Comer, 94, Lawrence, will be 1:30 pm Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation is planned, and a private family inurnment will be conducted. Dick died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Campbell, Mo., the son of John Henry and Ora Pearl McElyea Comer. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, and later earned a bachelor’s degree. He taught agriculture at Horton High School, and later was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist. He enjoyed antiquing, auctions, garage sales, fishing, and animals.

He married Barbara Carolyn Cox, and she survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Belinda Comer, Lawrence, and Phyllis Rookey, Robertsdale, Ala.; a grandson, Josh Comer, Lawrence; a granddaughter, Ambrosia Turner, Memphis, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews, including Sheila Comer LaFerney, John Comer, and Michael Comer. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Wayne Comer, Jettie Comer, Bob Comer, Pete Comer, Carl Comer, and Norman Comer.

Memorial contributions in Dick’s name may be made to the Lawrence Humane Society, P.O. Box 651, Lawrence, KS, 66044.
