Florence C. Smith passed away June 9, 2016, to be with her Lord and Savior in heaven. Her body has been donated to KUMC School of Medicine per her instructions. No services are planned.
She was born July 27, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY. She was a member of US Nurse Cadet Corps. In WWII and graduated as an R.N. from Bellevue Hospital Nursing School in 1946. She attended K.U. and received a degree in education. She worked most recently as a nurse at L.M.H. She also taught grade school at St. Johns, Wakarusa, and New York schools. She also taught nursing at Stormont-Vail Hospital.
She married Francis P. Smith in Brooklyn during WWII on February 10, 1948.
Survivors include her husband Francis P. Smith; brothers, John Frey of Puebla, Mexico, Jim Frey of Westminster, Calif.; 2 sons, Thomas P. Smith and Lawrence E. Smith; 2 daughters, Joan E. Starks and Mary C. Chaney; 2 grandsons, Maxwell Day Smith and Harrison Reed Starks; and a granddaughter, Kelsey Smith Myers.
I guess finding useful, reliable inatomfrion on the internet isn’t hopeless after all.
I so enjoyed working in the LMH nursery with her in the ’80s. Her kind spirit & radiant smile touched many. Our “Smitty” will certainly be missed. Kind thoughts to the family.

John and I were sorry to read of Florence’s death. We remember you and your family from the Hillcrest area and of course the years at KPL.
I am so sorry for the loss of your mom! Even if it is a better place for her, it is still a difficult loss!
