Messages & Condolences

From Robin Douglas...

I woke up this morning and thought about Sam. I was going to put a card in the mail to him. I came into work and received an email from John Hall stating that Sam had passed. I had sent Sam a card a few weeks ago, something I did from time to time, and I had spoken to him via the phone in February. I met Sam twice in my life, through the KOM reunions. We remained friends for 20 + years. He never stopped missing Babs. And it brings me peace to know that he is with her once again. He loved his daughter with every breath he took. He was an animal lover and loved his cats. And he was an all around nice, funny, happy, joyful guy. I will truly miss him, even though we only spoke 4 or 5 times a year and I would drop him a note from time to time in the mail, I am sure he knew how much not only I thought of him, but also how much his true friends thought of him. Even though he never met my mother, he always asked how she was. He was truly, truly kind. He will be so missed and if I take anything away from our friendship it is to begin each day with a positive attitude. I was blessed for knowing him.

From Cindy Merkel (Cindy Poulsen from Kasold)...

Deepest Sympathy and Condolences to your family. I lived across from Sam and Babs as child and have the fondest memories of them. I can recall spending many days sitting on the front porch with Sam and my brother Eric eating Nuts & Bolts that Bab’s made. They were so kind and loving to a couple of young kids! Sam definitely was a bright light in this world.

Sam and Babs were wonderful neighbors and friends when we lived on Kasold. They would have our children Keith,Pam and especially Cindy and Eric on their porch. Babs would make Nuts and Bolts, and Sam would entertain them with their cats for hours. He will be greatly missed. They were a wonderful couple.

Thank you so much Coach Sam for your positive influence on myself and many other young ball players when you managed the Legion team here in Chanute. GREAT MEMORIES!! No conversation can be had about baseball in Chanute without your name coming up. I have never forgotten you and have always loved you, and always will. Rest in peace with your beloved Babs my friend. All my best to the family in their time of sorrow.
