Marvin Joseph Groh

Services for Marvin Joseph Groh, 91, Lawrence, will be at 2 pm Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont. A visitation will be held after the service.

Marvin died Friday, March 16, 2018, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

Marvin Joseph Groh was born August 23, 1926 to Rev. Joseph Peter Groh and Suzie Ione DeTar Groh in Havensville, KS.

Marvin was a veteran of the United States Navy for 8 years serving in both World War II and Korean War. He was a Seaman First Class Radioman, continuing that interest later in life by becoming a ham radio operator with the call letters KOHHK.

On June 12, 1959 Marvin was united in marriage with Lois Mae James at the Lawrence First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, KS. She survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his sister, Arline Seidel Kurst of Trenton, MO. He is survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Chris Forshee, a niece, was a great support to him.

Marvin earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Emporia State University. He started the data processing program, formerly Kaw Area Vocational Technical School. His 24 years teaching experience at KAVTS was shortened because of spinal cord surgery.

He sang in numerous church choirs, was a member and officer of the Lawrence chapter of the Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Chorus, and a member of the Topeka Chapter of DPMA. Marvin was a long-time member of the VFW and the Lawrence United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the First United Methodist Church Choir and be sent in care of the funeral home.
