Janice Wright passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018 at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Facility in Lawrence, Kansas. She was 76. Janice was born on July 1, 1941 in Leavenworth, KS, the oldest child of Thelma Walton Wright and Laurence Melvin Wright. She and her younger brothers, Craig and Rex, grew up in Platte City, MO. Janice graduated from Platte City High School. She earned her bachelor of arts degree from then Central Missouri State University and an MA from New York University. She spent the next part of her life living in Europe, first in Madrid and then in Coimbra, Portugal where she married José Joaquim Barbosa in 1968; they had three sons: Daniel, Paulo, and André. Janice and the boys returned to Columbia, MO in 1975 and Janice began studies at the University of Missouri toward her PhD in romance languages, a degree she earned in 1994. A scholar of Medieval Galician-Portuguese cantigas de amigo, she brought what others have called a radical, feminist rereading to these poems of longing. Janice taught languages at Bemidji State University, directed the basic Spanish program at the University of Kansas, and taught Spanish language and literature at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. She retired from the College of Charleston in 2008 as a tenured associate professor. Upon her retirement, she returned to live in Lawrence, KS, where she enjoyed the company of her grandson Gabriel but hated the cold winters. In 2017, a series of health issues forced her to move to Pioneer Ridge Nursing Home in Lawrence where she remained feisty and stubborn to the end. “I hate bingo. It’s a dumb game,” she would say. She is survived by younger brother Rex (Platte City, MO); her three sons, Daniel (Lawrence, KS), Paulo and daughter-in-law Emilia (Lawrence, KS), and André (Charleston, SC); nephew Reis Wright, wife Cassie, and great nephew Willis of Platte City; niece Alexa Cromwell and husband J.B. of St. Louis; two grandsons, Gabriel and Tomás, both of Lawrence, KS; her friend Susan; all of the nurses, staff, and CNAs who cared for her at Pioneer Ridge; and Tuxedo, the cat. Inurnment will occur at a later date at Graceland Cemetery in Weston, MO.
