Gravesides services for Betty Jean Chalender, 81, Baldwin City, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Reno Cemetery in Reno, Kansas.
Mrs. Chalender died Tuesday, April 9, 2019, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehab.
She was born May 26, 1937, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Aloysius and Josephine Kerr Powell.
Mrs. Chalender was a homemaker for most of her life and also worked as a custodian at The University of Kansas. She enjoyed feeding birds, gardening, fishing, and boating, traveling, and watching KU basketball.
She married Robert R. Chalender, October 12, 1953, in Lawrence, Kansas. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include four children, James Chalender of Topeka, Kansas, Dale Chalender and wife Krista of Big Lake, Alaska, Debbie Schlesener and husband Kenny of Redding, Kansas, and Richard Chalender and wife Debbie of Baldwin City, Kansas; sisters, Rosemary Robinson of Oklahoma, Judy Johanning and husband Orville of Baldwin City, Kansas, Darlene Schwartz and husband Allan of Baldwin City, Kansas, Dorothy Johanning and husband Richard of Baldwin City, Kansas; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, William Powell, Allen Powell, Robert Powell, and George Powell, and a grandchild.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 3-4 p.m. Sunday.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lawrence Humane Society or the Alzheimer’s Association, sent in care of the funeral home.
