Roma Rae Wisdom

We all have an appointment with those pearly gates. We weren’t ready but, in true Roma fashion, she showed up early.

Roma Rae Wisdom left us on May 14, 2021. There is quite the reunion going on as she joins her husband, Terry, her brothers Lloyd, Kenneth, Bob, and Larry Whitson, her sister Sophia Howell, and her parents.

She was the youngest of 6 feisty kids brought into this world by Eula and Velmer Whitson. Tragically, Velmer passed when Roma was very small. After a time, along came Walter Parsons. Eula and Walter fell in love and he embraced the whole family.

Roma grew up in Lawrence picked on by her siblings and exploring with her friends. Other than a short time in Iowa when her own kids were young, the Lawrence and Eudora area has always been her home.

Roma’s kids were her pride. Josh Fraser (Molly), Amanda Murtagh, Amelia Murtagh, Josh Wisdom, Amber Garcia (Greg) and Jason Spillman.

Her grandkids were her joy. Chase Fraser (Caitlyn), Kori Fraser, Kasey Fraser, Makenna Wisdom, Madelyn Garcia, and Taylor Spillman. And the greats, Carter, Benjamin, Joshua, and Graysen.

She found herself working for the sanitation dept of Lawrence and worked her way up, making it into the drivers seat of a garbage truck and becoming the first female garbage truck driver in Lawrence. Roma found her calling. If it could haul, she could drive it.

She had an affinity for scratch offs and casinos backed up by an unusual amount of luck and intuition. She could tell you which machine to play and chances are you would win. It was fun to watch.

Roma loved her garden but she loved her dogs more. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Lawrence Humane Society in her honor.

Services for Roma will be Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 2pm at Rumsey Yost Funeral Home 601 Indiana St. Lawrence, KS 66044. We want to hear your stories! Feel free to write a few memories down and bring them with you.

It was such a pleasure knowing Roma and working with her. She was a beautiful person and her smile was contagious. She was like another sister to me. The heavens gained a wonderful angle.

From Rick Ziesenis...

I was saddened to hear of Roma’s passing. Like so many in life, for the people that loved her she was taken too soon, but there is comfort that she will be re-united with Terry and other people she has lost. She was a great lady and always had a great sense of humor. My deepest sympathies for her and her family, her earthly journey is over now but her new life has just begun.

From Tina & Scott Allen...

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family. We didn’t get the opportunity to meet Amanda’s mother but the privilege of having Amanda as a friend, is I’m sure, like knowing Roma. Please take comfort in your memories of her.

From Gayle Hornberger Daniels...

I am sorry for your loss of Roma. The last time I saw Roma was at her Aunt Ruth’s funeral, it was nice to catch up with her. I remember in grade school going to her Halloween birthday parties. I always looked forward to them and especially bobbing for apples. Sending love and prayers to all family and friends. She will be missed!

From Judy Gragg...

From Iris Eng...

I first met Roma at a mexican food restaurant. My Aunt and cousins including Terry when I was passing through. Later she told me she had cacer though I dont remember what kind. I had planned to see her on our trip. Unfortunately, that wont be happening. I feel really sad learning of her death. However I believe Terry was to lonesome without her. My heart really goes out to the family. Dear Amanda and all who love her. We will miss her here but we can take some consolation knowing she is with Terry.

From Judith Brown Spitzli...

Roma became one of my first cousins when Walter and Eula fell in love and married. I will never forget how excited my Uncle Walter was when his marriage included a family of children. The best part being Roma, a wonderful little girl for him to love and help raise. She brought much joy to his life and ours when she joined the Parsons family. The entire time I read her obituary I could see Roma with her warm personality and kindness. She was a blessing to many and will be missed.

From Miriah Fox...

So sorry for your loss. I am a friend of Amanda’s and met her momma twice when she came to California to visit. She was definitely a kick. She raised an amazing daughter and I feel very lucky to have met her and have her daughter as a dear friend. Amanda I love you and am sending you and your family much love.

From Francesca Fambrough...

My condolences to the family. Roma’s daughter’s Amanda & Amelia were good friends of mine as a teen growing up in Lawrence. She was a good mother & I was so impressed that she drove an industrial truck. May she be at peace in heaven.

From Carol Waisner...

Roma was a favorite driver at LRM, my husband Wayne thought the world of her. When Wayne passed away 5/15/2020, she attended his visitation and was so gracious and helpful to me. It was uncanny that their deaths were so close in dates and they had the same medical conditions. My heart goes out to her family and friends. She was “one of a kind”.
