Doris Brandt Sullivant, age 95, of Lawrence, Kansas passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at her home with her son and grandsons at her side.
She was born February 6, 1926 in Ottawa, Kansas and baptized at Tauy Church. Her parents were Louis and Grace Turner of Ottawa.
Doris grew-up in Ottawa. She met Royce Brandt at a Church of the Brethren young adults gathering in Lone Star. They married in 1945 and began farming at Lone Star. Their children, Robert and Susan, were born in Lawrence, Kansas. The family moved to Southern California in 1951 due to Royce’s health. They returned to Kansas in 1964 and settled in Ottawa. In 1970, Doris and Royce returned to their farm at Lone Star. She worked as the bookkeeper at Lawrence Public Library, and Royce worked with the Army Corps of Engineers at Clinton Lake. Following Royce’s death in 1980, Doris continued to live at her farm.
Over the years she participated in Crop Walk, Business and Professional Women (BPW), needle work group, book group, women in prison support group, and often attended annual conferences of the Church of the Brethren. She retired from the library and married Milton Sullivant in 1987. Following Milton’s death in 2000, she remained in their home in Lawrence. Doris enjoyed attending church regularly, spending time with family and friends, and traveling.
She is survived by her son Robert Brandt and his wife Shirley, of Lawrence, Kansas; her daughter Susan Heck and husband Christoph of Berlin, Germany; as well as her grandchildren Ryker Brandt, Ryan Brandt and his wife Brandy, Sarah Heck, and Leah Heck; and two great-grandchildren Beth Brandt and Emily Brandt.
There will be no public service or visitation but she will lie in state at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 5 and 6 for those who would like to visit.

We are thinking of you Bob, and the passing of your mom. 95 is amazing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Aunt Doris was the kindest most sincere person I have ever known. Even though she was no relation to me I heard my cousins when growing up call her Aunt Doris. She chose to adopt me as her niece I guess and I’ve always called her Aunt Doris. She always met you with a sweet smile and held your hand. When I was the organist at the Lone Star Church when I was young, even though I would make many mistakes she would always come greet me and say what a beautiful job I did. It saddens me greatly to know I will not have that anymore. A thank you to Bob and Ryker for their care of their mother and grandmother. Thoughts and prayers to all the family.
My mother, Vance Roberts, introduced me to Doris Sullivant in 1995. Doris was a new member of Round Table, a literary club. Through the years, I have come to know Doris better and better. I have such respect for her integrity, her kindness, her subtle sense of humor, and her generous spirit. I am grateful to have been her friend.
When I moved to this neighborhood in 2007, Doris welcomed me and became one of my best friends. I will miss her beautiful smile and the way she greeted me and my daycare kids every day. My condolences to her entire family. She will be missed but her memory will remain with me forever.
Doris and my mother, JoAnn Hubbard, worked together at the library and were good friends. Doris was very kind and had a warm smile that was contagious. Wishing peace and comfort to the family.
It’s hard to put into words how precious Doris was. She was a blessed addition to Lone Star Church, but more importantly tome personally. I cherish each week that I visited her. She would be sitting in her recliner with no radio or tv on and would say she was reminiscing and tell stories of her kids and grandkids. I will miss her always. She was loved by so many and so many were blessed by having her in our lives. My condolences to her family and thanks for sharing such a wonderful lady
I met Doris while attending a book club where she was a member. She was a sweet, special lady and I enjoyed her friendship very much. Doris always had a smile and was a friend to everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
Doris was one of the kindest people I have ever known. She was always thinking of others. She will be dearly missed by all. I offer my sincere sympathy to her entire family.
