Mitchell R. ‘Mitch’ Massey

Mitch went home to begin his heavenly life August 16, 2021. He was born on September 9, 1959, to Harold and Joyce Massey in Lawrence, Kansas.

Mitch graduated from Eudora High School in 1977. Mitch met the love of his life, Cathy Schanowski, in the mountains of Colorado, working at a summer camp for boys and girls. He married Cathy on August 8, 1987. After they married they resided in Lawrence, raising their two children, David and Lauren.

Growing up, Mitch was an avid Cub Scout and Boy Scout. He enjoyed many campouts at Camp Naish in Bonner Springs. He formed a great work ethic that he learned from his father.  His first job as a teen was at Howard’s Super Saver in Eudora. He worked at various jobs over the years, with his last job being at the City of Lawrence, where he retired earlier this year. Throughout his lifetime, Mitch exhibited leadership, dependability, and integrity in the workplace and it was well respected.

Mitch will always be remembered for his sense of humor. His magnetic smile and ability to light up a room with laughter, will be greatly missed by all those who love him. His kids were his pride and joy and he would stop at nothing to support them. One of his greatest joys was learning the game of softball with his daughter, Lauren, and following her from an elementary age through college-level play.

Mitch is survived by his wife, Cathy, son, David, daughter, Lauren, mother, Joyce, sister, Shari, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father, Harold, maternal grandparents, Francis and Betha McConkey, and paternal grandparents, Lester and Eula Massey.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 20th, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence.  Funeral services will be on Saturday, August 21st at 1:00pm at Rev City Church in Lawrence.  Graveside service will follow at Eudora City Cemetery.
