Surrounded by her loving family Sue passed on September 22, 2023, at home. Her family, especially her husband Joe and dear daughter Tara, were the bright lights of her life and she cherished every day with them.
Susan was born April 1, 1963, in Lawrence, Kansas. She is survived by her husband Joseph Mango; daughter Tara Mango; sisters Cathy Daicoff and Julie Daicoff (Maurice Stack Jr); her sister in spirit Bobbie Perry Flory (Scott); niece Jessica Stack; and nephew Joseph Stack (Laurie). She was proceeded in death by her parents, Margaret and Darwin Daicoff.
Sue’s hallmark was her passion for communicating and drawing others into conversations. She learned these skills at The University of Kansas where she earned a degree in communication in 1985. Susan used her people skills as event director in the hospitality industry at exclusive country clubs and the hotels in Dallas, Texas and Chester County, Pennsylvania. Ten years ago, Susan returned to Lawrence and became the Director of Development for KU’s Lied Performing Art Center. Susan’s relationships with patrons, audience, and staff were engaging and she achieved record-breaking contributions.
Susan was an avid reader who once challenged herself to read one book every week for an entire year. This interest expanded as she became involved in University Women’s Club as an event coordinator. Sue was a woman of faith that treated everyone with love and respect.
Susan’s other hobbies include gardening, home decorating and her peloton. Her decorating skills inspired her to start Sewing for the Home and Décor where she made custom draperies. She had a knack for taking something mundane and seeing its possibilities.
We all knew Sue’s love of chocolate. Every Sunday night for 50 weeks she tried new recipes in search of the perfect brownie recipe. She enjoyed cooking for her family, but baking was her specialty.
Memorials in honor of Sue can be made to Kansas University Endowment – Sue Mango Patio and Garden at the Lied, and may be sent to the Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive, Lawrence, Kansas 66045.
Friends of Susan are invited to join the family for a reception at Arterra, 2161 Quail Creek Drive, Lawrence, Kansas, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, from 5 to 8 pm.
A private inurnment will be held at a later date
I was Joe’s roommate. When he talked Scott Clemens into introducing him to this one girl name Sue. It’s was love for sure. He was smitten with her and down for the count before you knew it.
As I got to know Sue, it was obvious she was not just your ordinary person. Great kindness, compassion, she showed to others.
As Joe, Tara, family and friends grief, Susan‘s passing. I pray that the Lord will bring joy in the mist of the sorrow. As we all think of Sue… happy memories will be brought to our minds.
May we all learn to rejoice in the memory and know she is with our Heavenly Father.
Hugs and condolences for another classmate. May she rest in peace.
I am very saddened to hear of Sue’s passing! My thoughts and prayers go out to the Family. She was a wonderful Lady as we became friends through Crown’s and our personal association with the Lied Center. She will certainly be missed but hope she rests peacefully!
Joe, we are shocked and SO sorry to hear about Sue. Our hearts and prayers are with you and Tara. I remember the drapes Sue made for our home. She was so gifted and talented! She was always so sweet and personable…a joy to be around. We were so glad we got to know her while you were in mini-church. Please know we will be praying for comfort and healing for you and Tara.
I had the honor to work with Sue at the Lied Center for ten years. Not only was she a fantastic development director, she was also a WONDERFUL human being and friend. Her laughter, kindness and exclamations of joy will be greatly missed at the Lied. Love you Sue!
I was friends with Joe and Sue when they first met in Dallas. I could tell right away they were a good match. I saw their love for each other and God grow and blossom. I remember helping them move into their first house and begin to build their marriage. Several years after they had moved to the NE, shortly after Tara was born, we had a good visit with them. Despite only staying in touch on the occasional birthday or holiday, they both will always feel like close friends. I pray for emotional healing for Joe and Tara and everyone that knew what a special person Sue was.
Cathy and Mango family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I did not know Sue well but we always exchanged hellos and talked about our dogs when we were out walking. She added so much to our Villas community and she will be missed by many. Prayers to you all.
