Timothy William Hughs, passed away quietly on September 13, 2023 surrounded by friends and family who loved him. God broke the mold after Tim was born to the late Harland & Marjorie Hughs on May 27, 1947, in Ashland, Kansas. Raised as an only child on a cattle and wheat ranch among the rolling fields of southwest Kansas shaped Tim to be someone who loved his family deeply, both near and far, and perhaps gave him the preference for the bright lights of a big city instead of the streetlights of a small town.
Tim married Ruth Elaine Anderson in 1967 and were married for 30 years. Tim & Ruth were blessed with the adoption of one-year old Megan Elizabeth in 1976, a loving and devoted daughter who was Tim’s fiercest advocate in his later years.
Tim graduated from Wichita Drafting College in 1967 and the same year, enlisted in the United States Navy and served with honors as a Draftsman for the Navy’s Construction Battalion, better known as the Seabees. Tim served during the Vietnam War effort stationed in Vietnam, Midway Island and finally Gulfport, MS before being discharged with honors. Following service to his country, Tim earned a degree from the University of Kansas in Art Education, graduating in 1977 and would go on to teach Art at Nottingham Elementary and Eudora Middle School until 1984. Following his teaching career, Tim put his drafting expertise back to work at Hercules / Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in 1984 as Draftsman until his retirement in 2003.
Tim had a passion for the fine arts and live theatre performances and was an avid collector of Fiestaware and Roseville pottery, including a never ending hunt for the “rare finds”. As a collector and creative artist, Tim loved to frequent flea markets and antique stores and had a special place in his heart for White Cloud, KS where he could find treasures with friends. Tim was known for his quick wit, outgoing personality, and infectious laugh. Tim was a loyal friend and was blessed by deep friendships that stood the test of time. Tim was also an avid and faithful supporter of the Eudora Public library and served on the library board.
Tim lived out his final years at the Silverado Memory Care Facility in Overland Park, KS and was immensely blessed by his caregivers and community of friends there. Tim is survived by his daughter Megan Weeks, her husband Matt Weeks, their children Tyler, Cameron & Zachary and former spouse and friend, Ruth Hughs.
Tim requested no funeral or memorial service, but please consider a donation to the Eudora Public Library or the Eudora Food Pantry in his honor, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1260 Lawrence, Kansas 66044.
A celebration of Tim’s life will be held at a later date.
Megan and Ruth, I am so sorry for your loss.
Timmie Marie, as I was apt to call him, was a wonderful person and friend. He always made me laugh and was so supportive. I treasure his memory and the various pieces of his art I have.
Sending you love and hugs
I loved my friendship with Tim as I was first teaching at Nottingham Elementary School! Tim was my “secret buddy” one year for some holiday and he gave me sweet treats and a notecard with a recipe on it for Raisin/Oatmeal Cake that I still make and think of him!
In later years I enjoyed coming across him at the Heartland Men’s Chorus concerts in Kansas City! Thinking of Tim now brings a smile to my face!! 🥰❤️
I cannot express my love felt for your whole family. Tim was a special friend to all. Growing up in Small Town USA, everybody was friends. But felt a special friendship with Tim and Ruth. Love you all. Good memories to last our whole lifetimes.
At Eudora High School, Tim’s room was across the hall from my choir room. We immediately became close friends and shared many experiences during my five years at EHS. I treasured his talent, his wit and laughter, his love of family and his hometown. He holds a very special place in my heart.
My prayers are for you you, Ruth and Megan, and family. Tim has been a friend since we all grew up in Ashland and then when we were in school in Wichita. I was there when he and Ruth were married. Tim was a very good friend that I stayed in contact for all the years. He will be missed by all that knew him. My sympathies are with you all.
What a beautiful tribute! I learned a lot of new things about Mr. Hughs by reading this. A life well lived! I love how Megan (and Ruth) were his “fiercest advocate”(s) in these later years – a beautiful act of love and service ❤️
Ruth, Megan, Matt, Tyler, Cameron, and Zachary,
We are praying for you all as you mourn the loss of Tim. I praise God Tim is with his heavenly Father and is fully restored. The love and commitment you all shared for one another is a testament of God’s love. Praying for comfort and peace for you all. I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you hugs friends.
Tim and George were station on Midway Island in the SeaBees together. Also, Tim and Ruth, George and Peggy shared the same anniversary date, and when the boys had to leave on our first anniversary, we all met in Hawaii and on the beach we decided we were having such a good time we would share a 25th anniversary together… and we did in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! And what a grand time we had Tim was always such a joy. always ready to try new things, even seviche. And all through these years, we’ve remained friends. We are sorry to hear of Tim’s passing.
Tim and Ruth were our neighbors and our little girls, Megan and Jenny, played together for years. Tim and I also worked together for years at Hercules/SFAAP and we really enjoyed a good friendship. I know Megan was a loving and supportive daughter all these years and Ruth remained a good friend. May God bless Tim and his sweet family as they face his loss.
Tim was my most favorite cousin. Growing up my parents and grandparents talked of him often and I always felt his presence in our family despite the miles between us. Tim’s kindness will always be felt. My love to Megan, Ruth, Matt, Tyler, Cameron, and Zachary.
Tim was a beloved cousin to his East Coast family. Distance could not stop the love we shared.
Tim became my friend when we were in 7th grade and beyond. He was so kind and supportive as we navigated adolescence. I have thought of him often and am so sad to hear of his passing. My prayers are for Ruthie and her family at this time. May God bless and support you all. Much love. Rosalie
Tim was a wonderful man, Father and Grandfather who left behind a legacy of love. He always put a smile on my face with his humorous respones to questions. Whenever anyone would ask Tim how he was feeling he would say; “mostly with my fingers and wiggle his finger, or say with a smile on his face not bad for a old fart.” We will all dearly miss Tim at Silverado and it really was a privilege to get to know
Tim and his beautiful family.
