Patricia Ruth “Pat” Williams

Longtime Lawrence resident Patricia Ruth “Pat” Williams, aged 92, passed away on March 31, 2025, due to natural causes at Homestead of Eudora Memory Care. Her youngest daughter, Betsy Alford of Lawrence, was with her when she died.

Born on August 24, 1932, in Kansas City, Kansas, Pat attended public schools and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1950. She obtained her degree in elementary education from Baker University in 1954, where she was a member of the Phi Mu sorority. At Baker University, she met her husband, Ira “Bud” Williams III, whom she married in August 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas. Upon graduation and marriage, the couple relocated to Seattle, where Pat taught first grade while Bud completed his military service. They later returned to Baldwin and eventually settled in Lawrence.

A devoted mother, Pat was deeply committed to her children’s development and happiness. During their elementary school years, she founded the Golden Star Sewing Club in their Barker Court neighborhood, served as a Brownie Girl Scout troop leader, a Cub Scout den leader, and frequently volunteered as a school room mother. As a lifelong Methodist, Pat taught Sunday School and ensured her children participated in the weekly family candle-lighting celebration of Advent before Christmas, even when they left home to attend the University of Kansas.

In 1967, Pat began full-time employment within the Lawrence school district, ultimately serving as the attendance secretary at West Junior High School from 1969. Approximately five years later, she commenced over 25 years of employment at the University of Kansas, culminating in the role of lead accountant for the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Known affectionately as “Mother Pat” by the “Pharm Chem” community, she was revered by students and faculty alike.

“She impacted our lives, our children’s lives, and the lives of hundreds of faculty members, staff, and students in our department,” stated Dr. Ronald Borchardt, distinguished professor emeritus. Following Pat’s retirement, the Department honored her by naming a seminar room in her memory within the Pharmaceutical Chemistry Laboratories, part of the Higuchi Biosciences Research Area.

Predeceased by her husband, her parents, Royal Theodore “Ted” Williams and Evelyn Sarah (Cordner) Williams, and her younger sister, Mary Ann (Williams) Turkington, Pat is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Kay “Suzi” Peerbolte of Little Rock, Arkansas, Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Alford of Lawrence, and a son, Michael Ira “Mike” Williams of Salem, Oregon. Additionally, she is survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pat was renowned for her kind spirit, ever-present wry humor, and exceptional jigsaw puzzle-building skills. Although occasionally stubborn, she was unwaveringly dedicated to her family and friends. Her absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew her.

In accordance with her wishes, a simple family graveyard gathering will be held. Donations in her memory may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association or Good Shepherd Hospice in Lawrence.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Pat Williams family.
Mama Pat was a second mom to me while we worked at KU together and then for all of the following 30+years thereafter. The wonderful memories or her fill my heart right now. She will be greatly missed!

From Peter L. Peerbolte III...

May God bless you and Bud. You are together again. You both are missed.

From Tom and Vicki Oberzan...

Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family. Living next door to Pat and Bud for 30 years, they became a part of our daily lives. They were thoughtful, kind, and giving. Our talks were always fun, interesting, and insightful. Pat always talked about her children and their families, with love and admiration. Pat and Bud gave stability to the neighborhood, and Pat always had a fondness for the children and animals. She and Bud are truly missed and thought of frequently. Love, Tom & Vicki Oberzan

From Michael Hageman...

Pat was a very special gift to many who had the chance to cross paths with her. I was a graduate student in the Dept. of Pharm. Chem. from 1979-1984 and had the privilege to interact with her extensively over those years and for sometime after that. Her smile brightened every day, a real “mother figure” for all the graduate students. Speaking on behalf of her “graduate student children” of which she had many, thank you and know that she is remembered and treasured. Sincerely, Mike Hageman

Suz, I loved Pat sooo much!
I would LOVE to look through her ‘junk keepsake jewelry box’ again and listen to her stories!
What a ‘special’ gal but she could handle Peter Peerbolte pretty good 😉

From Tammy Dunning...

Pat was such a special lady. She meant so much to me. She was always there….for advice, a hug, a story, a laugh. She made work fun. You never knew what she might be up to, but you could always count on it being entertaining. There were times we laughed until we cried. Rest in peace Pat. I will miss you, but I feel so lucky to have so many memories to cherish. I’m sure you and Bud are already plotting shenanigans😊

From Julia Ingraassia...

I am deeply sorry to see this, I knew Mike, and Suzi a wee bit, when they spoke of their parents, their words were always so kind and respectful. Parents, have to “earn” that, and I always thought what a wonderful family they were. I knew Mike the best, by far, following him around the dark room desperately in high school trying desperately to learn the art of photography that he now puts in far more than a high school newspaper, his art is beautiful, again, art, music, those types of things, are a direct result of love and encouragement at home. All of the family will remain in my prayers and thoughts, I know this is a difficult time, keep your memories close to your heart. Sincerely, Julia Gregg-Ingrassia..
