Alan Rayford Johnson

Alan Rayford Johnson, 75, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025, at KU Medical Center with his wife, Terri, and children, Jake and Erin, by his side.

Alan was born on November 2, 1949, to Rayford and Ruth Johnson. He graduated from Leavenworth High School with the Class of 1967 and went on to attend the University of Kansas, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts with honors in Philosophy and Psychology in 1971, his Master’s in Psychology in 1973, and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Psychology in 1978.

While at KU, Alan was involved with Headquarters, a student-founded organization dedicated to helping people through difficult times during the Vietnam War era. That experience reflected the compassion that guided him throughout his life.

A proud Jayhawk and lifelong learner, Alan devoted his life to understanding and connecting with others. He was a social butterfly who never met a stranger—always ready with a story, a joke, or a thoughtful question. His wit, humor, curiosity, and kindness touched everyone who knew him.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Rayford Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Wilson of Lawrence; his son Jake Wilson and wife Anna Masciadri, and their children Ellea, Leo, and Vern; his daughter Erin Adams and husband Derek Davis, and granddaughter Ema; and his brothers Kendall Johnson and wife Deborah of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and Larry Johnson and wife Sheryl of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He will also be remembered fondly by nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

Alan will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. His warmth and laughter will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

A celebration of Alan’s life will be held at The Red Lyon Tavern 944 Massachusetts st. Lawrence Kansas, Nov 2, 2025. 11am – 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence Humane Society or HeadQuarters Ks.
