It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael (Mike) R. Cheek, a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend. Michael passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 21st, 2025, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Mike was born on July 3, 1950, in Laclede, MO. He was the son of Earl and Margaret (Adams) Cheek. He married the love of his life Carol Sanderson on August 14, 1970. They celebrated 55 years of love, laughter and memories.
Mike served in the Army Reserves from 1970 to 1976. He began his career in 1967 as a laborer in the Solid Waste Division for the City of Lawrence. He held every position in the department until he retired on October 1, 2009, as Solid Waste Supervisor. Mike received the 2005 Excellence in Public Works Field Supervision Award from the Kansas Chapter of American Public Works Association (APWA).
Mike will be remembered for the deep love he had for his family – especially the time he cherished with his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He had a passion for classic Western shows, eagles and always had a DIY project in the works. Mike found joy in family gatherings, where food was plenty and sweets were his favorite treat. In his younger years Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Mike is survived by his wife, Carol Cheek of Lawrence, KS; daughter Michelle Jaimez of Lawrence; son Chris Cheek (Keri) of Perry; sister Martha Engnehl of Lawrence; brothers Buck Cheek of Warsaw, MO, Randy Cheek (Cindy) of Lawrence; grandchildren Nick Jaimez (Milissa) of Lawrence, Haylee Cheek of Lawrence, Dylan Cheek of Perry; great-grandchildren Gabi, Elli, Alexis and Peyton and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, November 1st, 11am to 2pm at First United Methodist Church, 867 US-40 hwy, Lawrence KS,66049.
