Joan E. Cumpton

Joan Ellen Cumpton passed away June 18, 2026 at her home in Lawrence, Kansas, surrounded by her children. She was 94 years young.

Viewing will take place June 25, 2026 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m., 601 Indiana Street in Lawrence, Kansas. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 26, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Baptist Church, 1781 E. 800 Rd, Lawrence, Kansas. A graveside service will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Perry, Kansas, immediately following the Friday church service.

Born in Topeka, Kansas, January 26, 1932. She married William (Bud) Vinal Cumpton February 12, 1949 in Topeka. Bud preceded her in death in 2008. Joan is survived by her daughters: Karen Chipman (Bob), Olathe, Kansas; Vickie Buttram (Brian), Oskaloosa, Kansas; Tamara Williams (Robert), Perry, Kansas and sons: David Cumpton, Topeka, Kansas; Keith Center (deceased), Fort Scott, Kansas; nine grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Walton and Bessie Harris, and two brothers and one sister.

Joan was a member of East Side Baptist Church in Topeka for a number of years, serving in many capacities and singing with the Gospelettes who traveled area churches. Later, she and Bud joined Heritage Baptist Church in Lawrence. She loved her church.

Joan spent much of her career in the printing industry. She was employed by Hallmark Cards in Topeka and later managed Vacation Bible School Press, also Topeka, where she illustrated and printed Sunday School and Bible School material distributed nationally and to Missionaries in other countries. During her years in the printing business, she was a member of the International Club of Printing House Craftsmen and served many chairs in the club. Joan also served as club President. One of her favorite jobs was serving the Lord for several years helping Mercy and Truth Ministries at Heritage Baptist Church.

Joan enjoyed a variety of arts and crafts, bowling, and gospel music. She helped start Topeka’s annual Cider Days Fall Festival in 1982.

In her honor, the family suggests donations to the Heritage Baptist Church Youth Program. Contributions can be given at the viewing, the funeral service or mailed to the church.
