Iona Berniece Spencer, age 101 of Lawrence, passed away September 24, 2026. She was born March 8, 1925 at Watson, Shawnee Co., Kansas, the daughter of George C. and Bessie L. Glenn Herschell.
She moved with her parents to Highland Park at age 5. She attended grade and Junior High school in Topeka. She then moved with her parents, north of Big Springs and graduated from Lecompton Rural High School in 1944.
She first worked at the 832nd Supply Depot at Pauline. She worked in the Crop-Hail department for Home Ins. Co. Miller-Studebaker Ins. Co., Crop Hail Ins. Co, Reliance Ins. Co. and American States Ins. Co.
She was a member of the Church of Christ at Stull, Kansas. She was a life member of the Lecompton Historical Society, a member of the Douglas County Genealogy Soc. and Topeka Genealogy Soc. and a Life member of the Kansas State Historical Soc.
She married Vernon D. Spencer Feb. 10, 1946 in Lecompton. He preceded her in death Dec. 4, 1993.
Survivors include two sons, Rod Spencer of Lecompton and Roger Spencer of Alta Vista and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. In addition to being preceded in death by Vernon, she was preceded by her daughter, Gail Day, brothers and sisters and numerous relatives and friends.
Graveside Services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Eastview Cemetery, North of Big Springs, Kansas. The family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday before traveling to the cemetery. Arrangements are with Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home of Lawrence.
