Nebe Smart

Funeral services for Nebe B. Smart, 87, Lawrence, will be 3 pm, Friday, April 21, 2017, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill cemetery.

He died Monday, April 17, 2017, at Tonganoxie Nursing and Rehab.

Nebe was born on August 19, 1929, in Mt. Grove, MO, the son of William Jasper and Marvellia Viola Curtner Smart.

He worked for many years at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, De Soto, KS. After the plant closed he became a Heavy Machine Operator at the Lawrence Paper Company until he retired. When he wasn’t working he was tinkering in his workshop on different projects or working in his flower gardens. He also enjoyed fishing, watching westerns and any wrestling programs he could find on TV.

Nebe married Betty Joleen Flory on May 6, 1947, in Kansas City, MO, she preceded him in death in 2006.

Survivors include four sons , Gary, Tom (Marcia), Joe (Robin), all of Lawrence, Randy(Des), California; three daughters Jeri Long (Jim), Lawrence, Neba Coble, Perry, and Sherlina Barnes (Roy), Indiana; 20 grandchildren and 25 great grand children and 1 great great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, daughter Donna, son Leroy, and a grandson David.

Friends may call from noon to 8 pm Thursday, at the funeral home, the family will greet them from 7-8 pm.
