Katherine Jane “Kay“ Wells of Lawrence passed away on Wednesday, July 25.
Kay was born on September 10, 1919, in Lincoln, Kansas, and attended schools in Lincoln and Great Bend, Kansas. She graduated from Kansas State University.
Kay was married in 1947 to Robert Wells, and they raised their family in Garden City, where Bob was manager of radio station KIUL and served as publisher of the Garden City Telegram. Bob died in 2013.
Kay is survived by two sons – Kent and wife Debbie, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Kim and wife Bonnie of Lawrence; five grandchildren – Katherine Booth and husband Jamie of Littleton, Colorado, Ben and wife Kelly of Atlanta, Georgia, Nat and wife Christine of Washington, D.C., Trevor and wife Allyson of Long Beach, California, and Bryan and wife Laura Schlapp of Washington, D.C.; and three great grandchildren – Ford and Sam Booth of Littleton, Colorado, and Elena Wells of Long Beach, California.
A private family memorial service is planned for a later date.
Hello Kim and Kent, How fortunate I was to have your precious Mom & Dad in my life. Growing up on Hackberry/Gillespie street as neighbors, Community Church and later the visits in Lawrence. They will always be a part of me. Love to you both!
Kim, Bonnie & Family……What a joy Kay was to know and a great example how to live and love life. Her positive spirit and beautiful smile were always present whenever you were with her. Godspeed to her and to each and everyone of you.
So sorry to hear of Kay’s death . She was a fun person to know and always had a smile for you. A great loss for her family.
John and I will always remember Kay & Bob with love and friendship. Kay was my “life coach!” She had such a love of life and everything in it, especially fast cars, cigars & interesting people. We will miss her laugh and ease with everyone who was lucky enough to be her friend. Our thoughts are with her family.
We are saddened to hear of Kay’s passing. She and Bob were two of our favorite people! They were such great neighbors and so generous in every way. Kay was the hippest 90 year old wearing her leather pants and rocking it always! She will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your entire family.

We loved Kay so much. We will miss her when we go back to Lawrence.
Larry and are very sorry to hear of Kay’s passing. She was a wonderful lady and I will never forget her wide smile and great laugh. Her kindness and generosity affected everyone who was lucky enough to know her.
We were so sad to read of Kay’s passing but know she is so happy to be with Bob again. May peace and comfort find you all during this difficult time.
