Francis Alvin (Mac) McEnroe, 96, passed away on July 8, 2015, in Lawrence, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 8, 1918, in Kemmerer, Wyoming, the son of Emmett and Eunice McEnroe. Mac grew up in rural Shawnee County, Kansas, and graduated from Seaman High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, on active duty from February 1941 to December 1945, and then as an active reservist until 1959. After WWII Mac worked for the Santa Fe Railway in Topeka, where he met Dorothy Maxine Walters. They married on May 30, 1952.
Mac worked for IBM in Kansas City from 1953 until his retirement in 1981. He and Maxine resided in Overland Park from 1953 until 2014 when they moved to Lawrence. Mac was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village. In retirement he enjoyed playing golf with friends as well as volunteer work. Mac provided 8,167 hours of volunteer service to Shawnee Mission Medical Center from 1987 to 2013, and received the hospital’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2013.
Mac will be remembered for his kind, generous spirit and his love for his family. He is survived by Maxine, his wife of 63 years, Lawrence; a son, Bruce McEnroe, Lawrence; a daughter, Gail McEnroe, Chicago; granddaughters Anne McDonald (Joseph), Overland Park, and Emily Lange (Scot), Lawrence; and three great-grandchildren.
