Richard was born May 13, 1926, the son of Henrietta Marie Nieder and Theodore Henry Hack. He was a lifelong resident of Lawrence and only moved twice. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and became a 32nd degree member of the Scottish Rite in 1957. Richard and Mildred M. Mull were married in Eureka Spring, Arkansas, October 21, 1952. He is survived by his two daughters Gail A. Hack and longtime companion Kent Cobain of Ellensburg, Washington and Diane M. Hack and her husband Frank Foor of Lawrence. He is also survived by five nieces, Barbara Webster, Hopedale, Mass., Beverly Hyde of Lawrence, KS, Belinda Lambert of Clearwater, Florida, Betsy Bock of Cleveland, Ohio and Brittany Howell of La Crosse, KS.
He was preceded in death by his wife Millie September 24, 2000, his sister Mildred M. Bock of Largo, Florida, his parents and baby brother Harlan.
Richard worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, United States Public Health Service and 37 years for the Douglas County Health Department, retiring in 1988 as Director of Environmental Health. He served on several Boards including the Animal Control Board, Plumbing Board and the Solid Waste Management Board.
Richard and Millie traveled to forty different states and wanted to visit all forty eight contiguous states but Millie passed away before this was possible.
Richard had a very sharp memory and had a depth of knowledge of many thing especially Douglas County History.

Services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
