Funeral services for Samuel Don Griffin, Lawrence, will be at 11 am Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held 6 – 7:30 Wednesday at the funeral home. The family requests casual attire for all events.
Samuel Don Griffin was born October 7, 1998, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, the son of Jeff and Dawn Griffin. Sam has been a resident of Lawrence most of his life. He passed away in Lawrence on February 20, 2016.
Sam was a lover of music and was quite proficient especially on the guitar and bass. He was a bass player for the band Hotel Coffee with his friends Luke and Legend. He last played at the Bottleneck. He also played at the Jackpot, Frank’s Tavern, The Replay Lounge, and The Granada in Lawrence, The Boobie Trap in Topeka, and other venues across eastern Kansas, including but not limited to locations in Ottawa, Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. Sam’s work with Hotel Coffee will be recognized in the Lawrence Punk Rock Compilation, 2nd volume, to be released later this year.
Sam previously played for the band Secret 77. He received his high school equivalency diploma, and previously had worked at Checkers and Party America.
Sam was beloved by his friends and family. Sam’s closest friends included Legend, Luke, Emma, Sedric, and Charlie, among others.
Sam is survived by his parents, Jeff and Dawn of the home, and two brothers, Jason (Kate) and Joel all of Joplin, Mo. He is also survived by his Granny and Pa Don and Judy Crowell of Emporia, and his Grandpa and Grandma Tom and Beverly Griffin of Lawrence. Sam is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece Willa, and countless friends.
