He was born on August 26,1939 in Lawrence, the son of Cally Dillon and Katherine Barnes. Toby was a lifelong resident of Lawrence, leaving only briefly to serve in the United States Marine Corps. In his younger years, he could most often be found at the baseball fields, coaching his women’s softball team-a passion he pursued for over 30 years. Toby was a staple in the softball community, and when he wasn’t coaching, he could often be found umpiring.
At any given time, fishing poles, tackle boxes, and golf clubs could be found in the trunk of his car, ready for his next adventure. He loved to travel with his four daughters and never missed an opportunity to talk with anyone who would listen about sports
Survivors include his sister Patricia Hobbs (Patrick) of Lawrence; Four daughters-Barb Shuck (Todd) of Lenexa Kansas; Kate Rice of North Kansas City, Missouri.
