Visitation for Shirley C. Wedd, 94, Lawrence, will be held at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory on Monday, July 20, from 6 to 8 pm. Inurnment will take place at Bucyrus Cemetery, Bucyrus, KS on Tuesday, July 21 at 10 am. Mrs. Wedd died Wednesday at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
She was born August 20, 1920 in Kansas City, Mo, the daughter of Fred B. and Maude Smith Shaw. She graduated from Emporia High School in 1938 and earned a Bachelor’s degree of Education from Kansas State Teachers College. During the war she taught art in the Garden City and Junction City School Districts.
Her greatest joys in life were her family, quilting, painting and her Labrador Retrievers. She never missed an event that her husband, children and grandchildren participated in. During the fall she could be found at Lawrence High School football games cheering on the Lions.
Shirley married Ralph H. Wedd Jr. on February 23, 1947, in Emporia. He preceded her in death in 1984. Also preceding her in death were two brothers Fred B. and Austin B. Shaw.
Survivors include two sons Dirk Wedd and wife Gwen and Greg Wedd, all of Lawrence; a daughter Shirlene Wedd, also of Lawrence; four grandchildren Shane Wedd, Lora and Scott Hardesty, Lynsey and Kevin Grace, and Kyle Wedd; and three great grandchildren Hudson, Harrison and Halle Hardesty. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Arline Shaw (Fred) of Mountain Home, Arkansas.
Shirley’s family wish to thank the staff of the Arbor at Brandon Woods for the loving care she was given over the last two and a half years. You are greatly appreciated.
