Sandra H. Gray

A memorial visitation for Sandra “Sandy” H. Gray, 70, Lawrence, will be Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place.

Mrs. Gray died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Sandy was born October 14, 1940 in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of Peter John and Rose Sakulsky Kraus.

Mrs. Gray had retired from Bendix-King Radio a branch of Allied Signal.

She married Charles “Charlie” William Gray, May 18, 1961 in Colorado Springs, CO, he survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Miles Gray, of Lawrence; a daughter, Amber Wolf and husband, Mark, of Lawrence; a step-daughter, Tammy Sue Page and husband John, of Camp Point, Illinois; five grandchildren, Taylor Gray, Dakota Gray, Miller Wolf, Heather Large, and Mike Large; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

M. Kathleen Hodges

Graveside memorial services for M. Kathleen Hodges, 88, Bel Air, Maryland, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, with the Rev. Dr. Gary W. Teske officiating.

Mrs. Hodges died Monday, Mar. 21, 2011.

She was born Mar. 12, 1923, in Lawrence, the daughter of George and Kathryn McCall Robson. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1940.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Christ our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter Q, the Harford Co. MD Garden Club, the Retired Officer’s Wives Club, and a past volunteer chairman for the American Red Cross at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. She enjoyed bridge, theater, and singing.

She married Maj. Gen. Warren D. Hodges on Apr. 25, 1943, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on Oct. 15, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Elizabeth Kendrick.

Survivors include a son Richard W. Hodges and wife Janet, Joppa, MD.; a daughter, Wanda K. Strange and husband Jack, Basehor; a sister, Leah Torres, Alamagordo, N.M.; two brothers-in-law, Lt. Col. Erv Hodges and wife Shirley, Lawrence, and Dr. Merle A. Hodges and wife Nancy, Salina; a sister-in-law, Leta Percival and husband Ivan, Lawrence; six grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

Robert Steven “Steve” Smith

Funeral services with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical and United States Air Force Honors for Robert Steven “Steve” Smith, 50, Lecompton, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Mustard Seed Church, with Department Chaplain Rev. Paul Taylor and Chaplains Rev. Tim Moulett and Capt. Ben Hayden officiating. Cremation is planned following the services.

Mr. Smith died Monday, Mar. 21, 2011, at his home.

He was born Sept. 21, 1960, in Plattsburg, N.Y., the son of Robert Elmer and Anna Lois Hughes Smith. He graduated from high school in Sumpter, S.C. He joined the United States Air Force in 1981 and later joined the United States Army, before returning to the Air Force. He served during Operations Desert Storm, Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and New Dawn. He had attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant, and was scheduled to be promoted to Chief Master Sergeant.

He was employed by the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical as an engineer/EMT-I, with 20 years of service. He enjoyed firearms and his quarter horse.

Survivors include two sons, Joshua Smith, Ottawa, and Chance Smith, Topeka; his parents, Osage City; a brother, Gary Smith, Berryton; a sister, Lara Tauck, Ekalaka, Mont.; five grandchildren, and six nieces and nephews.

Friend may call from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mustard Seed Church, with honors provided by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

Rex A. Ferrett

Graveside memorial services with military honors for Rex A. Ferrett, 61, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 22, 2011, at Oak Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Don Ogden officiating.

Mr. Ferrett died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Leavenworth.

He was born Dec. 5, 1948, in Vanderbilt, Michigan, the son of William and Ruby Holborn Ferrett. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

He worked for the City of Lawrence Street Department for several years before becoming disabled. He was a lifetime member of the Alford-Clarke Post 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lawrence.

He married Carol Austin on Dec. 16, 1977, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Toni Proper, Whittemore, Mich.; a brother, Mel Ferrett, Davison, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Les Ferrett.

Dorothy M. Ellis

Graveside services for Dorothy M. Ellis, 85, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hartford Cemetery near Hartford, Kan.

Miss Ellis died Monday, Mar. 14, 2011, at The Windsor of Lawrence.

She was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Americus, Kan., the daughter of Elmer and Florence Magee Ellis. She graduated from Emporia High School

Miss Ellis worked as a clerk/typist in Amarillo and Dallas before moving to Kansas City, Mo. She worked for the Social Security Administration for 16 years before retiring in 2008 and moving to Lawrence.

Survivors include two sisters, Joyce Friesen and husband Ben, Lawrence, and Wilma Louvier, Harrisonville, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann B. McClelland

Services for Ann B. McClelland 76, Lawrence, were at 2 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. McClelland died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at her home.

She was born September 27, 1934 in Wea, Kansas, the daughter of Henry O. and Alma Mae York Steinmetz. She graduated from Rosedale High School in 1953.

Mrs. McClelland worked as a quality control manager for the Ford Motor Company and Sewell Plastics. She also was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, making blankets, watching Nancy Grace on TV, tending to her plants, and taking care of her dogs.

Ann married Melvin “LeRoy” McClelland on Nov. 28, 1977, in Miami, Oklahoma. Ann referred to him as the love of her life. He died March 14, 2010.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Rogers, Lawrence; 2 sons, Jim Rogers and wife Laurie, Lawrence, Jake R. Rogers, Jr. and wife Nancy, Saint Marys; 3 stepsons, Eric McClelland and wife Debbie, Lawrence, Allan Sutton and wife Vickie, Ottawa, and Robert Sutton and wife Gloria, Lawrence; 2 step daughters, Paula Falscroft and husband David, Kansas City, and Patricia Gibbons and husband Bob, Lawrence; 3 grandchildren, Emma McClelland, Lawrence, Dustin Rogers, California, and Jimmy Rogers, Centralia; and 1 great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son.

Robert E. “Bob” Saathoff

Funeral services for Robert E. “Bob” Saathoff, 72, Lawrence will be at 10am. Monday at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Norwood officiating. Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Saathoff died Tuesday at his home. He was born May 11, 1938 in Nevada, Missouri the son of Benjamin L. and Edna Belle Hart Saathoff.

Mr. Saathoff attended Lawrence High School and graduated in 1956. He worked at Morton Block Co., Kansas Color Press, and retired from Lawrence Paper Co. in 2008.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He married Judy A. Hoover on May 30, 1958 in Lawrence, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include sons Larry Saathoff and wife Sheryl and Gary Saathoff all of Lawrence, brother Ben Saathoff, Jr. and wife Rose of Mesa, AZ, step-brother Jerry Petrie and wife Joyce of Lawrence, step-sisters Janice Quintana of Gilbert, AZ, and Shirley Pampus of Lamar, CO, grandchildren Becky, Rachelle, and Renae.

Maxine Hoyle Peters

Plainview-Graveside services for Maxine Hoyle Peters will be at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 in Plainview Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Taylor, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.

She was born July 2, 1918 in Hale County, Texas the daughter of Henry and Bama (Davis) Hoyle.

Mrs. Peters died Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital

She attended Plainview schools, graduating from Plainview High School in 1936. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from West Texas State University at Canyon in 1940 and Masters of Education Degree from Texas Tech University in 1955. She taught in the Plainview Public Schools for seven years and also in California and Oklahoma Public Schools. After retiring, she and her husband moved back to Plainview in 1976.

Mrs. Peters was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UMW, NON Study Club, Delta Delphin Study Club, Hospital Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, and the Duplicate Bridge Club.

She married Gerald H. Peters on June 9, 1953. he preceded her in death on November 22, 1999.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Mark Peters; and a sister, Maurine Schur.

Survivors include two daughters Nita Scales and husband Joe, of Lawrence, Kansas, and Billie Loyd of California; nephew, Gary Schur and wife Paula of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Charles C.E. Russell

A family memorial for Charles Ernest “C.E.” Russell Jr., 90, Lawrence, will take place at a later date. Mr. Russell died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Iola, the son of Charles Ernest and Jesse Russell. Mr. Russell was a communications officer in the U.S. Navy, serving two years in the Pacific during World War II. Upon his return, he and his family moved to Lawrence where he completed law school at Kansas University. Mr. Russell practiced law in Wellington from 1948 until retiring in 2003. He also served as city attorney in Wellington for more than 40 years. In 2003, he was honored by the League of Kansas Municipalities for 50 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Joan Russell, a Wellington native; two daughters, Sheryl Aydelott and husband Guy, of Eugene, Ore., and Cara Connelly and husband Jim, of Lawrence; three sons, Mark Russell of Lawrence, Chris Russell and wife Lori, of Boerne, Texas, and Curt Russell, of Wellington; six grandchildren, Todd Aydelott, Ged Aydelott, Corey Russell, Victoria Jackson, Lauren Russell and Michael Russell; and five great-grandchildren.
