Arlene (Marie) Haines

Services for Arlene Marie Haines, 92, of Osage City, Kansas, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, Lawrence, Kansas.

She passed away on Friday, October 31, 2014, at the Osage City Nursing Center.

Marie was born September, 5, 1922, in Buffalo, KS, the daughter of Arlin Leroy and Zola Annette Baird Anderson.

She married Charles Elwood “Woody” Haines on August 10, 1946 in Chanute, KS.  He preceded her in death in 1996.

Survivors include three daughters and their husbands: Carol and Don Coffman, Wichita, KS; Sheila and Ron Ireland, Missoula, MT;  Pattie and George Lieber, Osage City, KS;  two sisters:  Laurel (Metchie) Kraft; Pat and Leon Comstock, all of Lawrence, KS;  four grandchildren:  Bridget Ireland, Katherine and Tony Troiano, and Kevin Ireland, all of Montana, and Kurtis Lieber, Lawrence, KS;  one great-granddaughter:  Dempsey Troiano of Montana.

Marie was an accredited school teacher, starting with a one-room country school. She also was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed accompanying her husband, Woody, and her sister, Metchie, both violinists.  Marie and Woody enjoyed traveling, and, of course, all the grandchildren. The latest addition, great-granddaughter, Dempsey, was a special delight to Marie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Osage City Nursing Center, sent in care of the Funeral home.

Kimberly Rachelle Rice

Funeral service for Kimberly Rachelle Rice, 52, Lawrence, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 4th.  at the First Baptist Church, Troy, Kansas. Burial will follow at Courter-Richie Cemetery, Troy.

Kimberly died Thursday, October 30, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born September 10, 1962, in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Hobert Henry and Velma Wilson Rice.

Survivors include brothers, Raymond Douglas Rice and wife Candie of Basehor, KS, Kevin Bruce Rice of Miami, FL; sisters, Susan Renee Enloe of Kansas City, KS, Donna Marie Perez and husband Robert of Tonganoxie, KS, Karen Beth Henderson and husband Jon of St. Joseph, MO.

The family will receive friends before the funeral from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Midland Ministries, 709 E. Hyde Park Ave, St. Joseph, MO 64504 or in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Kathleen “Kathy” Ann Schott Gates

Kathy Gates, 63 of Lawrence, Kansas passed away Friday night, October 24, 2014 at her childhood home, in the presence of her loving family, during her final month, and following her short battle with cancer.

Kathy was the daughter of Anna Lauretta Pierce and Raymond D. Schott. She and her twin, Cindy, were born during the 1951 flood in Lawrence, Kansas on July 16.

Kathy graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College in 1974 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Biology.

She married Don Gates, Lone Star, Kansas in October of 1976. He survives. They had a beautiful daughter, Retta Gates Martin.

Kathy worked many years for Allen Press in Lawrence as a proofreader. She wrote a book with her twin sister, Cindy Schott Hutchison in 2005. She always had an interest in family and local history.

Kathy was preceded in death by her mother, Lauretta Schott in 2001.

Kathy is survived by her daughter, Retta Gates Martin (Jeremy Martin), of Olathe; and her twin sister, Cindy Schott Hutchison, (Glenn W. Hutchison Jr.), of Belton, Missouri. She is also survived by her father Raymond D. Schott, Pioneer Ridge in Lawrence, Kansas.

No service is planned. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please give contributions to the Lawrence Humane Society in Kathy’s name.

Richard William Pasley

Services for Richard William Pasley, 54, Lawrence, will be at a later date. Mr. Pasley died October 22, 2014 in Lawrence.

He was born October 31, 1959 in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Rick was a gentle soul, who loved to work with his hands. He built many a bicycle from salvaged parts, and would gladly give one to anybody who needed some wheels.  He was also a very good craftsman, and gardener.  I don’t think there was a plant, tree, or shrub that he couldn’t identify.  He loved spending time with his son, and riding many a mile on his bike.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by a son, Grady Underwood and fiancée Kelsey Richardson, of Lawrence; sister, Ramona Kemberling and husband Dennis, of Eudora; and a niece, Sarah Swan, of Lawrence.

 

Bud Nation

A Celebration of Life for Bud Nation, 89, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 am Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 27th & Lawrence Ave. A visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

Oscar C. “Bud” Nation was born on July 15, 1925, the seventh child of William and Pearl Nation. He grew up within four miles of Gore, Oklahoma on farms in that area. He attended a rural school named ‘Bailey’ later changed to Cedar Creek. He graduated from Gore High School and attended Kansas University.

He entered the Air Force and served at the 20th Air Force Headquarters on Guam and later transitioned to the 15th Air Force at Smoky Hill AFB in Salina, Kansas. He married Helen Wegner on September 26, 1948 at Great Bend, Kansas. He and Helen had three children, Debra, Barbara, and David. Debra presented them six grandchildren: Andrew Herren, Nathaniel Herren, Susannah Herren, Rebecca Herren, Laura Schmidt and Matthew Schmidt. Andrew & Kristin Herren presented two great-grandchildren, Adessa & Tylis. Susannah Carnegie presented five great-grandchildren, Malik, Rorie, Ariella, Zechariah, and Gabriella. Rebecca & John Carr presented three great-grandchildren, Jack, Ever, and Sun. Laura & David Friedberg presented great-grandchild Annistyn. Matthew & Alexandra Schmidt presented great-grandchild Gabriella. He was also survived by two sons-in-law, Tim Schmidt and Bruce Jackson.

Bud retired from Farmland Industries after more than 32 years of employment as the paymaster, which he greatly enjoyed. He enjoyed many years serving at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lawrence as an officer and teacher. He held many offices in the Lutheran Laymen’s League at local, zone and district level. Bud was elected as president of the Kansas District Lutheran Laymen’s League on the same day as his own father was called to his eternal home in 1968.

He enjoyed announcing horse shows and held many roles in equestrian circles. He loved working with the children of the local Trail Riders Club. He enjoyed writing poems about his friends and relatives, short stories, and family genealogy along with the histories of the Douglas County Trailriders Club and the (former) Farmland Nitrogen Plant.

Bud coached little league baseball in the DCABA and Holcomb leagues, Sunflower Soccer and premier leagues. He once said he never met a child that he didn’t like, and was overjoyed when they began to call him “Grandpa”.

Bud would like to be remembered for the love of his Savior and his family, and by all of the many people in Church, Lutheran Laymen’s League, Equine world, and the boys and girls he coached in the many sports.

Bud was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. He says “Send no flowers for me for I won’t see them. Shed no tears for me, for I like smiles better. Do not tell me goodbye, but rather so long and plan to be with me later in Heaven.” He is overjoyed to be at last called HOME, to a place he longed for, for many years.

Harold Eugene Gulley

Services for Harold Eugene Gulley, 92, Lawrence, will be private.

Mr. Gulley died Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.

He was born August 14, 1922, in Lawrence, the son of  Tobe and Flossie Harris Gulley.  He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1940.

Mr. Gulley served in the U.S. Army Air Force and worked for Southwestern Bell for 33 years as a lineman and later as an installer.

He enjoyed raising cattle, bird watching, traveling, woodworking, and living in the country.

He married Esther “Becky” Crumet on April 13, 1944 in Lawrence and have celebrated 70 years together.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include daughters, Diana Bissell of Lawrence, Jennifer Nelson and husband Chuck Mauk of Baldwin City; son, Larry Gulley and wife Toni of Westfield, North Carolina; and 4 grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the funeral home.

 

Delbert O. Longfellow

Graveside services for Delbert O. Longfellow, 90, Lawrence, will be 2 pm, Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Memorial Park Cemetery.

He died Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include a daughter Anita Gardner, Tecumseh, KS; two sons Sterling J. Longfellow, Lawrence, KS, and Jay B. Longfellow, Wichita, KS; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife Virginia M. Longfellow, a son Gary O. Longfellow.

Friends may call from 1-8 pm Tuesday where the family will receive them from 7-8 pm, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, sent in care of the funeral home.

Nora G. Brandt

No services are planned for Nora G. Brandt, 84, Lawrence. Mrs. Brandt died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at The Windsor of Lawrence.

She was born Jan. 9, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Joseph L. and Mary Hunt McCormick. She graduated from high school, and later earned an Associate’s degree.

Nora worked in the office of the New York State Insurance Fund as the Supervisor of Operations.

Local survivors include a daughter, Nannette Brandt, Lawrence.

Pearl L. Smith

A Celebration of Life service for Pearl L. Smith, 90, Eudora, will be at 7 pm Saturday at Lawrence First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Bob Giffin officiating. Pearl died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at Medicalodges Eudora.

She was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Evansville, Ind., the daughter of William and Irene Cox Kensell.  She attended schools in Evansville.  She was a cosmetics consultant at Yonker’s in Mason City, Iowa, and later managed several apartment houses in California.  Pearl enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, and going to the casinos.  She attended Lawrence First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Dalrymple and husband Ramon, Eudora; two sons, Gilbert Phillips and wife Melissa, Oakland City, Ind., and David Phillips and wife Patty, High Chaparral, N.M.; a brother, Raymond Kensell and wife Faith, Brookville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Mary Ann Phillips and Raymond Louis Phillips, and a grandchild.

Jesse Lee Peterson

Graveside services for Jesse Lee Peterson, 33, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 am Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Nate Rovenstine officiating. Jesse died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014, at his home.

Jesse was born Feb. 18, 1981, in Council Grove, Kansas. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1999, where he was a yell leader and a member of Pro Cheer. Jesse attended Barton County Community College on a cheerleading scholarship. After college, he became co-owner of Cheer Fusion in Wichita, Kansas. He moved back to Lawrence in 2010 and began working for Community Living Opportunities where he soon had an ESL home for special needs clients. He was awarded an Achievement Award for his work with his special needs clients. In 2013, he began working for Bethesda out of Olathe, Kansas in his home as an ESL home for special needs clients.

Jesse is survived by his parents, Duane and Deb Peterson, Lawrence; two brothers, Justin and wife Brandy, Lawrence, and Jamie and wife Samantha, Bartlesville, Okla; three nieces, Dezera, Ravyn, and Tatum Peterson, Lawrence; two nephews, Johnny Drake, Lawrence, and Hunter Weeks, Kansas City, Kan.; grandparents LeMyra Allen, Lawrence, Larry Allen and wife Janet, Bellevue, Neb., Charlene Peterson, Grapevine, Tex.; a great grandmother, ‘Grammy’ Isabelle Erichsen, Lawrence; and aunts and uncles, including Dan and Cathy Allen, Naples, Fla., Connie Peterson, Grapevine, Tex., and Jere and Kim Peterson, Tulsa, Okla.
