Alberta Opal Snow

A celebration of life for Alberta Opal “Bertie” Snow, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.  Private burial will be conducted in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Snow died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at the Douglas County Visiting Nurses Care Cottage in Lawrence.

 She was born Oct. 21, 1922, in rural Jefferson County, the daughter of Oliver Richard and Ida Jane Daniels Garner. She graduated from McLouth High School in 1941.

Mrs. Snow worked for Douglas County Visiting Nurses from 1985-91.  Previously, she had worked at Kansas University in the Educational Placement Bureau and the Continuing Education departments, and also for the Lawrence Journal-World.  She was a member of First Christian Church, and a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Past Noble Grand Club, a past president of Oldsters United for Responsible Service dance club, and was a volunteer caregiver to many family members and friends.  She was also known as ‘the cookie lady.’

She married Walter R. Snow in 1943, in Lawrence.  He died Mar. 11, 1969.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Snow, Overland Park; a daughter, Nancy Hale-Martinko and husband Ed, Lawrence; a brother, Raymond Garner, Shawnee; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends following the service.
