Memorial services for Douglas Brent (Doug) Nairn, 65, Lawrence, will be 11 am, Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Doug died Saturday, June 10, 2017, at Bridge Haven at Alvamar, in Lawrence, Kansas.
He was born March 5, 1952, the son of Nolen Gene and Earlene Marie Kiger Nairn. Doug graduated from Great Bend High School and later attended classes at Barton County Community College.
He moved to Lawrence in 1976 to open and manage Bailly’s Farm Supply (now Orscheln Farm & Home). In 1985, Doug went to work for Freeman Used Furniture, which was then owned by his in-laws Loren and Marjorie Freeman. Finding great joy in meeting new people, he and his wife purchased the business in 1988. For over twenty years he continued to build the business before ultimately closing the store and retiring in 2008. Doug was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early 2010.
Doug married Sheree Rene’ Freeman on January 7, 1978, in Lawrence, Kansas. She survives of the home, along with his daughter Melissa Cox (Nick) Maryland Heights, MO, and two sons, Shawn and Ryan, both of Lawrence. He also leaves 4 incredible grandchildren: Elena and Abigail of Maryland Heights, Cambrynn and AvaLee of Lawrence. He will be missed by his sister Cathi Conaway (Chuck), brother Clay (Lisa), and 6 nieces & nephews: Brandon, Bret, Dallas, Dakota, Bailey & Jake. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends can stop by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home from noon to 8 pm Friday, June 16th, 2017. A visitation, with the family present, will take place from 7pm to 8 pm. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
