Funeral service for June Weatherwax, 94, Lawrence, will be 10 am. Thursday, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Rob Baldwin will officiate.

She was born June 26, 1921, the daughter of William Stevens and Esther Evans Griesa.
June attended Pinckney Grade School, St. Mary’s Academy for 3 years in Leavenworth and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1939. She attended Kansas University and was a member of Pi Beta Phi, KU Alumni Association, 20th Century Club, and on the Board of Directors for The Boys Achievement Place. She was a avid golfer coming very close to a hole in one by less than 2 inches. She played bridge weekly in several clubs, was a great cook, loved flowers, in fact everything growing, her red barn at Mount Hope Nursery, Kansas University campus, and antiques.

Her family owned and operated Mount Hope Nursery established in 1861 by A.C. Griesa. This company planted trees all over Lawrence including the beautiful redbuds on the KU campus. The final job before selling the nursery in 1972, they planted Massachusetts St in downtown Lawrence considered a “Tree City USA”.

June had an extended family! At any time, you could find her in the kitchen cooking for her family or talking to someone looking for a great listener and some direction in life. She volunteered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and Lawrence Public Library.

She married John Thomas Weatherwax on December 4, 1940. He preceded Her in death on August 29, 2008. She was also preceded in death by 2 sons John Thomas Jr. in 1949 and William Steven in 1960, and a daughter Joy Weatherwax Jerrick Pattin on July 17, 2009.
