Funeral services for Wilbur Lee Wright, 82, Lawrence, will be Tuesday at 2 pm at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Dr. Lawrence, with the Rev. Matt Sturtevant officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Wright died Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 10, 1935, in Robinson, Kan., the son of Warren and Fay Pierce Wright. He graduated from Powhattan High School in 1953, and from Highland Jr. College in 1955. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1958, where he attended Military Police training at Camp Chaffee, Georgia. He later worked in Army administration as a clerk/typist in the Fischbach, Germany Ordnance Depot. Following his Army stint, he returned to Kansas State University to graduate with a degree in Agriculture Economics in 1963. Wilbur worked for 37 years in civil service, including 33 years with the Farmers Home Administration. He was a 50+ year member of First Baptist Church, where he served on the building committee and as a Deacon. He also attended Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City, Mo. Above all Lee enjoyed his family and friends through his passion for farming and all things mathematic. He owned farms in Douglas, Franklin, and Jackson County.
He married Virginia Jean Peters on Mar. 12, 1958, in Lompoc, Calif. She preceded him in death in 1991. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son Kurtis Lee Wright, a brother George Wright, a sister, Avanell Roseberry, and a nephew Nathan Wright. Survivors include two sons, Kyle Wright and wife Tammy, Virginia Beach, Va., and Karl Wright and wife Angie, Pomona; grandsons Kurtis, Michael, and Wyatt; granddaughters Virginia and Sarah; and great grandsons Mason and Maddex.
