Hannalesa Aggen Roney

Memorial services for Hannalesa Aggen Roney, 89, Lawrence, were held Saturday Aug. 20, 2011 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, with the Rev. Dr. Peter A. Luckey officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

Mrs. Roney died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, after a brief stay at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was a resident of The Arbor at Brandon Woods at Alvamar, where she had lived since July, 2009.

She was born June 6, 1922, in Norderney, Germany, the youngest daughter of Julius and Johanna Aggen. The Aggen family emigrated to the United States in 1925, and settled in Liberty, Mo. where she attended grade school and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School.

Mrs. Roney moved to Concordia, Kan. in 1966 where she and her husband operated the Cloud 9 Drive-In, the Sigma I and the Brown Grand movie theaters. She was instrumental in securing recognition of the Brown Grand Theater on the National Historic Register, and was a founding member of the Board of Directors that oversaw the renovation of the opera house. In 1971, she opened her own antique store, the General Store, and operated it for the next 25 years.

Mrs. Roney enjoyed reading, music, and antiquing. She had a deep and abiding faith, lived a long and interesting life, had a very kind heart, was loved deeply by many, and will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched.

She married Jack L. Roney on June 10, 1943. Together they shared 66 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Erich and Julius.

Survivors include two daughters and their families, Laurie Roney Blaha and husband Paul and children Sam, Seth, and Silas, Benton, Kan., and Marlesa Roney and Vern Hillsman, Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time on Saturday.

Deborah Kay (Crockett) Jacobsen

Deborah K. Jacobsen, 62, of Baldwin City, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after her determined fight with a lengthy illness.

She was the daughter of the late Harold and Lavone Crockett, of Ottawa, KS.

Debby was born June 5, 1949, at Ransom Memorial Hospital. She grew up on the family farm in rural Franklin County, moving with her family to Ottawa as a teenager and graduating in 1967 from Ottawa High School.

While living in Ottawa she was employed at a downtown clothing store and later as a compositor-typesetter at the Ottawa Herald.

In 1969 she moved to Muskegon, MI. In 1970 she gave birth to a daughter, Lavone (Lee) Elizabeth Payne. While in Muskegon, she worked at a variety of occupations, first with a newspaper and later in restaurant management.

Retiring due to illness in 2005, she returned to Kansas, making her home in Baldwin City to be close to her many brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Lavone E. Payne, of Hudsonville, MI; her grandson, Michael Masar Jr., of Grand Haven, MI; four brothers, Daniel (Jo), of Estoria, OR, Hank (Patsy), of Topeka, Steven (Cathy), of Rock Springs, WY, and Douglas, her twin, (Robin) of Emporia; and sisters, Sara Crockett, of Topeka, Jerry (Robert) Macomber, of Ottawa, Iva Dougherty, of Baldwin City, and Catherine Crockett-Casey, of Ottawa, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private memorial service on September 4th, 2011. Deb generously donated her body to medical study to the KU Medical center in hopes that someone else could be helped. Her remains will be memorialized beside those of her parents and David, her late brother, at Gardner Cemetery.

Lois Victoria Tooker (Milberger)

A native of Kansas City, MO, Lois returned to the Midwest eight years ago after 30 years in Northern California. A graduate of the University of Kansas, Lois earned an MBA from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, and had a long, successful career as an advertising executive in San Francisco. In recent years, she enjoyed ranch life in Oskaloosa, KS, where she and her husband Wayne moved to lead a simpler life closer to the land. Lois was proud of her Midwestern roots, and particularly of her descent from the founders of Milberger, KS, near Russell. Lois loved her family, her horses and dogs, and was deeply committed to animal rescue and volunteer work. She enjoyed gardening and needlework, and her skills were admired by all who knew her. She will be remembered by friends and family for her great warmth, humor, intelligence, generosity, and loving spirit. Lois was the beloved wife of 18 years to Wayne Tooker; cherished sister of Joanne Milberger Bell; and devoted auntie to Alexandra Victoria Bell and Eric, Jordon, Chasey, and Talon Tooker. She was preceded in Heaven by her parents Victoria and Louis Milberger.
Vistation for friends and family will be August 27 from 2-4 pm at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence, KS.

Barbara E. Sult

No public services will be held for Barbara E. Sult, 70, Lawrence. Private interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Sult died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 8, 1940, near Wakenda, Mo., the daughter of George Otto and Ruth Elizabeth Saunders Bahr. She grew up in Carrollton, Mo., and moved to Kansas City, Mo. in 1958, and later to Lawrence in 1975.

Mrs. Sult joined the Lawrence Police Department in 1977 and received numerous commendations during her tenure. She retired as a detective in 1989 due to Multiple Sclerosis. She had previously worked for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, and the first woman to be the director of the Kansas Branch of International Arson Investigators. She was also a member of the Carrollton Rebekah Lodge, and a Royal Neighbor.

She married Charles E. Sult on July 23, 1960. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Curtis Sult, Topeka; a daughter, Rita K. Sult, Lawrence; and a brother, Freddie Bahr and wife AnnaLee, Carrollton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Jackie Bahr.

Per Mrs. Sult’s wishes, there are to be no flowers, and memorial contributions may be made to the Fraternal Order of Police Lawrence Lodge #2, P.O. Box 272, Lawrence, KS, 66044, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Luella Lorraine Waisner

Funeral services for Luella Lorraine Waisner, 91, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with Pastor Gerald Vaughn officiating. Burial will be in Clinton Cemetery.

Mrs. Waisner died Monday, August 15, 2011, at Baldwin Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born March 14, 1920, in Spring Fork, Missouri, the daughter of Rolla Warner & Emma Ellen Alderman Neffendorf. She moved to Douglas County in 1951.

Mrs. Waisner sold Watkins products during the 1960’s. She worked as a bow operator for Hallmark Cards for 19 years, until her retirement in March of 1985.

She loved to garden and grow roses. Her pies and cakes have been enjoyed by family and friends for many years. With her loving heart so big, anyone who entered her home became adopted. She will be sorely missed.

She married George Roe Waisner on July 25, 1942, in Sedalia, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2003.

Survivors include three sons, Gene Ray, Berryton, E. Wayne, Baldwin City, and John LeRoy, Eudora; two daughters, Irene L. “Rene” Wissler, and Barbara Yvonne Rollins, both of Lawrence; 16 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

Carolyn Bailey Berneking

Carolyn Bailey Berneking

Carolyn Bailey Berneking, age 96, died on August 11 at Lawrence Memorial
Hospital. Mrs. Berneking was born in Kansas City, Mo., June 21, 1915. Parents
were Dr. & Mrs. William H. Bailey of Oklahoma City; grandparents were Prof. &
Mrs. E.H.S. Bailey, Lawrence, Kansas and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence E. Walker of
Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Berneking graduated from the University of Kansas in
1937 with a degree in music, and later she received a master’s degree in library
science from the College of Emporia. She married Christian Louis Berneking III
of Trenton Mo. in 1937, who died in 1998.

Mrs. Berneking taught public school music in Elmore County, Alabama before
moving to Auburn, Alabama where she was a cataloger at the Auburn University
Library. She worked as a cataloger at the Elizabeth Public Library, Elizabeth,
New Jersey before coming to Watson Library, University of Kansas, as a serials
librarian. She became librarian at Central Junior High School in Lawrence and
after retirement she volunteered at the Kansas University Archives, Spencer
Research Library from 1990 to 2004. During this time, she also worked as a
preservation historian. She placed several houses in Lawrence, buildings on KU’s
campus, and a historic landmark site in Douglas County on the National Historic
Register.

She was a member of Pi Beta Phi (social sorority), serving as president of the
Alumni Club; Daughters of the American Revolution; Twentieth Century; Historic
Mount Oread Fund; Lawrence Preservation Alliance; Douglas County Historical
Society; Kansas State Historical Society; and the First Presbyterian Church,
Lawrence, Kansas.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter: William Bailey Berneking, Wayzata,
MN; Christian Louis Berneking IV and wife Elizabeth, Evansville, IN; Carolyn
Berneking Kelleher, Spicer, MN; nine grandchildren and several great
grandchildren.

The family suggest memorials to the Dr. William H. Bailey Memorial Award in care
of the Kansas University Endowment Association. Private internment will be in
Oak Hill Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence.

Dorothy M. Baldwin

Graveside services for Dorothy M. Baldwin, 81, Clinton, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Clinton Cemetery, with Pastor Don Ogden officiating.

Mrs. Baldwin died Tuesday, Aug, 9, 2011 at her home.

She was born Mar. 29, 1930, in the Hesper Community, south of Eudora, the daughter of Ralph and Ethel Westerhouse Votaw. She graduated from Eudora High School.

Mrs. Baldwin worked as an election clerk for Douglas County, and retired from there after many years of service. She previously had worked in the meat department at Rusty’s IGA. She also worked on the family farm, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, and crocheting.

She married Moreland Baldwin on May 23, 1948, in Eudora. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Joyce Lindsey, in 1989; a brother, Vernon Votaw, and a sister, Eva Lancaster.

Survivors include a son, Jim Baldwin and wife Jerri, Clinton; two grandsons, Loren and Donald Baldwin; and a sister, Lela Morley, Eudora.

Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. At the request of Mrs. Baldwin, the casket will remain closed.

Dan Gene Rebik

A memorial service celebrating the life of Dan Gene Rebik, 54, will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 12th at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

Dan died on Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Dan was born on November 18, 1956 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Rebik. His family moved to Waterloo, Iowa. Dan graduated from Central High School in Waterloo.

He attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with a BA. and MA in Philosophy. Dan took doctoral classes at the University of California at San Diego and the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Mr. Rebik was employed by Wal Mart for the last 17 years. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid chess player, a well versed historian, and an eclectic collector of books and knowledge.

He is survived in death by his wife of 32 years, Jeanne, two daughters, Jennifer Boyce of Lawrence, Kansas, and Dawndellynn Kral of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 4 grandsons, Chris , Cameron , Chaylin , and Cobey; one granddaughter, Jessica; and one sister, Debbie Koziel of Omaha, Nebraska.

Directly following the memorial service, a reception will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the East Lawrence Recreation Center meeting room at 1245 East 15th Street, Lawrence, Kansas.

Doris Opal Churchbaugh

Funeral services for Doris Opal Churchbaugh, 99, Overland Park, KS formerly of Baldwin City will be 11am Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Grove, KS.

Mrs. Churchbaugh died Friday, August 05, 2011 at Delmar Gardens in Overland Park.
She was born February 10, 1912 in Rural Franklin County, KS, the daughter of Charles Albert and Nellie Pearl Allen Myers.

Mrs. Churchbaugh moved to Douglas County in 1934, to Baldwin City in 1993 and spent the past few years at Delmar Gardens in Overland Park. She and her husband farmed in Southern Douglas County for 63 years. She drove a school bus for Willow Springs School from 1958 to 1962. Mrs. Churchbaugh was a member of Palmyra FCE, Extinction, (Family and Community Education), and the Centropolis Christian Church.

She married Leslie Theodore Churchbaugh, they were married for 63 years, he preceded her in death on Apr. 9, 1997.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter Vera Flora, her parents, and 5 brothers.

Survivors include a sister Adeline Watts and husband Norman of Centropolis, grandchildren Debbie Rogers, Brenda Sweeney, and Larry Flora, 8 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday noon to 8pm. The family will receive friends Wednesday 10am to service time at the Funeral Home.
